Meatless Monday: Vegan cashew cheese
Try a vegan substitute for cheese by blending cashews, water, and yeast, and adding different flavors such as fruit or herbs. Spread it on crackers for snack, or serve as a condiment with dinner.?

So??I?ve arrived. Day 3 of being at the tower. Good thing they brought in a snow plow to clear the paths to the outhouse, storage sheds, and cabin. It would have been days of?shoveling. Day 1 of the fire season and I?m starting with a base of 36 cm of snow!
And guess what??It?s still snowing. I?ve been in a snow cloud now for a solid 24 hours and there doesn?t seem to be an end in sight. That?s not a bad thing necessarily. It?s giving me lots of time to ?settle? in. Unpack boxes and suitcases. Trying to find things, like where do they keep?batteries, the broom, and mop? This place has been shut up since last October so there?s a bit of cleaning to do. And I have nothing but time.
Lots and lots of time. Especially since the Internet (using an Aircard), isn?t nearly as good as I had hoped for. It doesn?t look like I?ll get as much use out of it as I had planned, except for the necessities (incredibly long loading times), like blog posts. That makes me a little sad. But I am in the middle of nowhere and should be grateful, after all, to have it in the first place. So, no more complaining from me.
I returned to the same tower I was at 4 and 5 years ago. What are the chances?
There are some good memories here and I keep finding evidence of my story, here and there. Antique salt and pepper shakers I brought with me the first year that I?d forgotten about. Small delicate glass shakers. So out of place in this rugged isolated place. A beautiful scented candle my best friend gave me years ago for my birthday (mostly used up, but with a little life left in it yet). The scent is Mediterranean Fig. An old apple basket I used to keep my onions and garlic in. Oh! And best of all, the tackiest clock you ever did see. Dusty blue in color, with a floral brocade background. Hideous, yet still hanging in the exact same spot. There?s a fondness for that hideous thing, for some reason or another.
This is an old cabin with plenty of character. Probably built in the 1970s, judging by the cupboards, wood paneling and the state of the floor. I better get my nostalgia in while I can. This ol? cabin is being ripped out next year and being replaced with a newer, ?better? version. I say ?better? since the new cabins are supposed to have very little storage in the kitchen and the bedroom closet has been replaced with an indoor shower. The shower sounds promising doesn?t it? Don?t get too excited, there?s still no running water, but it does provide a good place for a shower bag and protection from the bugs (priceless!). However, for a girl who loves food, cooking, and clothes, cupboard space and a closet are just as essential. I guess we?ll just have to wait and see.
As for the whole vegan thing, after three days, I feel a little hungry. I won?t lie.
If you?re wondering about a meat lover going vegan, I go into detail about it in?this post. But essentially I?m still a meat eater so if anyone wants to come by with some hunted meat or farm fresh eggs, I?m in. But finding sustainably raised meat around here would be next to impossible unless you were in tight with the locals. So I?m putting my values to the test. Can I do it? Probably, if I can figure the hunger part out.
On Day 1, I just unpacked. On Day 2, I made some soft vegan ?cheese? made of soaked cashews. Something I?ve been meaning to try. Wish I had done it earlier. Boy was I missing out. I actually have to refrain myself from eating it by the spoonful. I?ve also made some sprouted spelt and sesame bread and a couple extremely delicious meals.

Sept. 11 airplane debris could have been placed deliberately, police say

Pieces of what is believed to be landing gear from one of the airliners that hit the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001, was discovered wedged between two buildings in lower Manhattan.

Police say they are not ruling out the possibility that a 5-foot-long chunk of airplane debris found near the World Trade Center site, believed to be a piece of landing gear from one of the planes that hit the towers more than 11 years ago, could have been placed there deliberately.
NBC 4 New York was the first to report Friday that?the part was found wedged between two buildings in a very narrow alley only about 18 inches wide between the rear of 50 Murray St. and the back of 51 Park Place (see map at NBCNewYork.com), the site where a mosque and community center has been proposed three blocks from ground zero.

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said there was rope intertwined in part of the gear, and there were no marks on the buildings indicating the piece hit the walls on the way down. The part bears a "Boeing" stamp, followed by a series of numbers, as seen in an exclusive photo obtained by NBC 4 New York (see below).
Kelly visited the alley Friday evening and viewed the debris from about 30 feet away. He described the piece as being about 5 feet by 4 feet by 17 inches, lying in a "very, very narrow, confined area."?

"Somehow the part gets down there," Kelly said. "Could it have been lowered at some time, it's possible."
Still, Kelly said he was not surprised to see such a large plane part anchored in such a tight area.
"If you see how confined this space is, and you realize the chaos that existed down here on this street, it's not surprising," he said. "No cleanup went on in this 18-inch space between these two buildings."?
The NYPD said the landing gear was found after surveyors hired by the property owner inspecting the rear of 51 Park Place called police on Wednesday. See below for a map.
Police spokesman Paul Browne said the NYPD has?secured the location "as it would a crime scene," and investigators are photographing the scene and restricting access until the medical examiner completes a health and safety evaluation.
Officials said the soil below the piece of debris could also be searched for remains.?
Police officials say the part could be difficult to remove, and may require demolition work that would destroy the two surrounding buildings. Officials are expected to be back at the scene on Monday to see if it can be removed.
"It really is a historical artifact," Kelly said.
When plans for the Islamic center at 51 Park Place were made public in 2010, opponents said they didn't want a mosque so close to where Islamic extremists attacked. They argued the site was "sacred" because landing gear from one of the hijacked Boeing 767 jets had punctured the roof of the building on Sept. 11.
During street protests, they clashed with supporters of the center, who said it would promote harmony between Muslims and followers of other faiths.
The building includes a Muslim prayer space that has been open for three years. After protests died down, the center, called Park51, hosted its first exhibit last year. The space remains under renovation.
Mohammed Fekonus, who prays inside the mosque at Park51 and whose son was a Stuyvesant High School student who ran from the dust cloud on Sept. 11, is convinced discoveries like the plane part could be endless.
"We were all emotionally distressed by that event," he said.
"If you really want to look for things, we'll find things 100 years from now."?
Donna Marsh O'Connor, who lost her daughter Vanessa Lang Langer in the attacks and is a member of September 11th Families for a Peaceful Tomorrow, called the landing gear discovery "bizarre."
O'Connor is a supporter of the Islamic center and said the fact that the plane fragment was found there "makes me think that this was the right place for a center that was going to heal the divide."
The name Boeing and a serial number is visible on what is believed to be a piece of land gear from one of the commercial airliners destroyed on Sept. 11, 2001. The piece was discovered wedged between two buildings in lower Manhattan.
In a statement, Sharif El-Gamal, the president of Soho Properties, which owns 51 Park Place, said workers called the city and the police as soon as they discovered the landing gear. He said the company is cooperating with the city and the police to make sure the piece of equipment "is removed with care as quickly and effectively as possible."
Patricia Riley, whose sister Lorraine Riley was killed in the Sept. 11 attacks, called the landing gear discovery "very strange."
"Twelve years later we are still finding remnants of the attack on our country," she said. "... For years to come we'll continue to find things that we didn't see before. Hopefully, they'll serve as a reminder that we have to stay vigilant."
The Park51 space, a former Burlington Coat factory, is a five-story, mildly run-down building. Renovations are expected to take years and would add an auditorium, a pool, a restaurant and culinary school, a child care facility and artist studios.
On Sept. 11, American Airlines flight 11 hit the north tower at 8:46 a.m., and United flight 175 hit the south tower at 9:03 a.m.
The rubble from the 9/11 attack was cleared from the 16-acre site by the spring of 2002. Other debris, including human remains, has been found scattered outside the site, including on a rooftop and in a manhole, in years since.
Boeing declined comment.

Collapsed Bangladesh factories ignored evacuation
SAVAR, Bangladesh (AP) ? Deep cracks visible in the walls of a Bangladesh garment building had compelled police to order it evacuated a day before it collapsed, officials said Thursday. More than 200 people were killed when the eight-story building splintered into a pile of concrete because factories based there ignored the order and kept more than 2,000 people working.
Wednesday's disaster in the Dhaka suburb of Savar is the worst ever for Bangladesh's booming and powerful garment industry, surpassing a fire less than five months earlier that killed 112 people. Workers at both sites made clothes for major brands around the world; some of the companies in the building that fell say their customers include retail giants such as Wal-Mart.
Hundreds of rescuers, some crawling through the maze of rubble in search of survivors and corpses, worked through the night and into Thursday amid the cries of the trapped and the wails of workers' relatives gathered outside the building, called Rana Plaza. It housed numerous garment factories and a handful of other companies.
An Associated Press cameraman who went into the rubble with rescue workers spoke briefly to a garment worker pinned face down in the darkness between concrete slabs and next to two corpses. Mohammad Altab pleaded for help, but they were unable to free him.
"Save us, brother. I beg you, brother. I want to live," Altab moaned. "It's so painful here ... I have two little children."
Another survivor, whose voice could be heard from deep in the rubble, wept as he called for help.
"We want to live, brother. It's hard to remain alive here. It would have been better to die than enduring such pain to live on. We want to live. Please save us," the man cried.
After the cracks were reported in the walls of Rana Plaza on Tuesday, managers of a local bank that also had an office in the building evacuated their workers. The garment factories, though, kept working, ignoring the instructions of the local industrial police, said Mostafizur Rahman, a director of that paramilitary police force.
The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association had also asked the factories to suspend work starting Wednesday morning, hours before the collapse.
"After we got the crack reports, we asked them to suspend work until further examination, but they did not pay heed," said Atiqul Islam, the group's president.
On Thursday morning, the odor of rotting bodies wafted through holes cut into the building. Bangladesh's junior minister for home affairs, Shamsul Haque, said that by late Thursday morning 2,000 people had been rescued from the wreckage.
Brig. Gen. Mohammed Siddiqul Alam Shikder, who is overseeing army rescue teams, said the death toll had climbed to 203 by Thursday afternoon.
Dozens of bodies, their faces covered, were laid outside a local school building so relatives could identify them. Thousands of workers' relatives gathered outside the building, waiting for news, and thousands of garment workers from nearby factories took to the streets across the industrial zone in protest.
Shikder said rescue operations were progressing slowly and carefully to save as many people as possible.
He said rescue teams were standing by with heavy equipment and would "start bulldozing the debris once we get closer to the end of the operation. But now we are careful."
He also said the huge crowd that remained at the collapse site Thursday was interfering with getting more rescuers to the scene.
"We are ready with about 1,000 soldiers and rescue workers from other departments. But a huge crowd is obstructing our effort," he said.
Thousands of workers from the hundreds of other garment factories in the Savar industrial zone took to the streets to protest the factory collapse and poor safety standards for the country's garment workers.
Television reports said that hundreds of protesting workers also clashed with police in Dhaka and the nearby industrial zone of Ashulia. It was not immediately clear whether there were any injuries in those clashes.
The garment manufacturers' group said the factories in Rana Plaza employed 3,122 workers, but it was not clear how many were in the building when it collapsed.
Searchers worked through the night to probe the jumbled mass of concrete with drills or their bare hands, passing water and flashlights to people pinned inside.
"I gave them whistles, water, torchlights. I heard them cry," said fire official Abul Khayer late Wednesday, as he prepared to work late into the night.
Abdur Rahim, an employee who worked on the fifth floor, said he and his co-workers had gone inside Wednesday morning despite the cracks in the building, after a factory manager gave assurances that it was safe. About an hour later, the building collapsed. The next thing Rahim remembered was regaining consciousness outside.
Abdul Halim, an official with the engineering department in Savar, said the owner was originally allowed to construct a five-story building but added another three stories illegally.
On a visit to the site, Home Minister Muhiuddin Khan Alamgir told reporters the building had violated construction codes and that "the culprits would be punished."
Local police chief Mohammed Asaduzzaman said police and the government's Capital Development Authority have filed separate cases of negligence against the building owner.
Habibur Rahman, police superintendent of the Dhaka district, identified the building owner as Mohammed Sohel Rana, a local leader of ruling Awami League's youth front. Rahman said police were also looking for the owners of the garment factories.
Among the garment makers in the building were Phantom Apparels, Phantom Tac, Ether Tex, New Wave Style and New Wave Bottoms. Altogether, they produced several million shirts, pants and other garments a year.
The New Wave companies, according to their website, make clothing for major brands including North American retailers The Children's Place and Dress Barn, Britain's Primark, Spain's Mango and Italy's Benetton. Ether Tex said Wal-Mart, the world's biggest retailer, was one of its customers.
Primark acknowledged it was using a factory in Rana Plaza, but many other retailers distanced themselves from the disaster, saying they were not involved with the factories at the time of the collapse or had not recently ordered garments from them.
Benetton said in an email to The Associated Press that people involved in the collapse were not Benetton suppliers. Wal-Mart said it was investigating and Mango said it had only discussed production of a test sample of clothing with one of the factories.
The November factory fire that killed 112 people drew international attention to working conditions in Bangladesh's $20 billion-a-year textile industry, but Wednesday's collapse highlighted that workers still face danger. The country has about 4,000 garment factories and exports clothes to leading Western retailers, and industry leaders hold great influence in the South Asian nation.
Bangladesh's garment industry was the third-largest in the world in 2011, after China and Italy. It has grown rapidly over the past decade, a boom fueled by some of the lowest labor costs in the world. The national minimum wage, which was doubled in 2010, stands at $38 per month.
The Tazreen factory that caught fire in November lacked emergency exits, and its owner said only three floors of the eight-story building were legally built. Surviving employees said gates had been locked and managers had told them to go back to work after the fire alarm went off.

'Human Computer' Shakuntala Devi Dies at 83
Quick: What's the cube root of 61,629,875?
Stumped? Shakuntala Devi, the woman known as the "Human Computer," could tell you, and probably faster than any mathematical computer could.
Devi, who passed away on April 21 at age 83 in her hometown of Bangalore, India, toured the world as a prodigy for much of her life, making appearances on radio, television and in theaters, the New York Times reports.
In a 1977 appearance at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Devi found the 23rd root of a 201-digit number in just 50 seconds, besting a slowpoke Univac computer that took 62 seconds to make the same calculation. The root of a number ("X") is equal to another number ("Y") that can be multiplied by itself a given number of times to equal "X." So the 23rd root of "X" equals "Y" multiplied by itself 23 times. Devi earned a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records in 1982 after she correctly multiplied two 13-digit numbers in just 28 seconds before a stunned crowd at Imperial College in London, the Times reports.

The early life of Devi, born Nov. 4, 1929, showed little promise. She was raised in an orthodox Brahmin family, the Telegraph reports, but one with a wild streak: Her father refused to follow family tradition by becoming a priest ? instead, he entered the circus as a trapeze artist, lion tamer and human cannonball.
Devi received virtually no formal education as a child. "At 10, I was admitted to Class 1 of St. Theresa's Convent in Chamarajpet," she once told the Times of India. "But my parents could not afford the monthly fee of Rs 2 [2 rupees], so in three months, I was thrown out."
While playing cards with his daughter, however, her father noticed Devi's unusual gift for computation and memory, so he launched her career of performing in the circus and in road shows.
"I had become the sole breadwinner of my family, and the responsibility was a huge one for a young child," Devi was quoted as saying. "At the age of 6, I gave my first major show at the University of Mysore [India], and this was the beginning of my marathon of public performances."
When she visited the United States in 1988, educational psychologist Arthur Jensen of the University of California at Berkeley tested her performance in several arithmetic tasks.
"Devi solved most of the problems faster than I was able to copy them in my notebook," Jensen later admitted.
"For a calculating prodigy like Devi, the manipulation of numbers is apparently like a native language, whereas for most of us, arithmetic calculation is at best like the foreign language we learnt at school," Jensen was quoted as saying.
"She was a vibrant lady who was sharp-minded and energetic. A witty person, she was fiercely independent as well," D.C. Shivdev Deshmudre, trustee of the Shakuntala Devi Educational Foundation Public Trust, told the Times of India.
Also a successful astrologer, cookbook author and novelist, Devi is survived by a daughter, son-in-law and two granddaughters.

Kiefer Sutherland Reluctant Fundamentalist Interview
Mira Nair?s film of the novel ?The Reluctant Fundamentalist? isn?t about terrorism, Kiefer Sutherland observes, but about the reaction to terrorism ? a very different thing.
?It?s what I was moved by when I read the material,? Sutherland, 46, says, relaxing in a conference room of a Union Square hotel in Manhattan. ?My focus on 9/11 was on the victims ? in the towers, in the planes ? and all that loss.
?But I didn?t think of the profound ripple effect it had on people of the Muslim faith, on people of color ? of the effect it had on them here and abroad. This script made me focus on the reaction ? from suspending our own civil liberties to being able to get through that initial anger and deal with the specific problem, as opposed to just lashing out.?
In the film, Riz Ahmed plays Changez Khan, a Pakistani who goes to Princeton and rises quickly to become a Wall Street analyst, who is hired by Sutherland, as the head of a firm who spots Changez as a young man with a future. But that future starts to crumble after the events of Sept. 11, 2001, which doesn?t necessarily radicalize Changez so much as alter the way he is perceived in the U.S.
?I love the character Riz plays,? Sutherland notes. ?He understands, he empathizes ? hey, the kid is living the American dream. But if you keep telling someone that they?re something ? even if they?re not that thing ? eventually they?ll become that thing. In our reaction to 9/11, I think we alienated a lot of people who could have helped us deal with the real problem.
?When I read the script, I was really moved by it. I found the script unbelievably enlightening. I hope people who see the movie are as moved by it as I was by the material. Ideologically, it represented how I felt.?
It seems ironic to Sutherland, who spent 2001-10 starring on the counter-terrorism thriller ?24? on TV, that no one so far in interviews has mentioned the show ? with its explicit and melodramatic use of torture as a regular plot device. But Sutherland is ready when it is mentioned.
?My response is simple: For starters, we were shooting the first season of ?24? six months before 9/11 happened,? he says. ?And ?24? was born out of a fantasy. We were trying to create a new format with which to tell a story. The torture sequences were a great dramatic device that gave the show a sense of urgency and dynamics. Whereas this film is a response to a reality. To me, the difference is night and day.?
Sutherland notes that a lot of reaction and opinions about terrorism following 9/11 were ?born out of ignorance. That leads to prejudice and racism. It?s too easy to issue a blanket indictment of a group of people. If you take a minute to learn about the situation before you form an opinion, it helps. But that?s something we do ? myself included.?
Since the end of ?24,? for which he won both an Emmy and a Golden Globe, Sutherland has been working relatively steadily, doing a revival of ?That Championship Season? on Broadway and, most recently, in the two seasons of the series ?Touch.? While that show doesn?t look like it will be back for a third season, Sutherland says, ?I had a great time. I really enjoyed the second season. I loved the pilot script and just decided that I?d rather do it than regret not doing it. I also like working. I seem to do better when I?m working than when I?m not.?
Currently filming ?Pompeii? for director Paul W.S. Anderson, Sutherland also hopes to finally make a film with his father, Donald Sutherland, a western they plan to shoot in Calgary in August.
?It?s the first time we?re working together,? Sutherland says. ?It?s one of those one-shot deals, where you want to find something that is going to be special. When Jane and Henry Fonda finally worked together, it was ?On Golden Pond.? You only get to do something like this once.?
He?d also like to do more theater, and has a particular interest in finding a new play to work on.
?I guess that?s partly my fault ? I might not be on top of anybody?s list, when it comes to access to new material,? he says. ?So I do revivals of ?The Glass Menagerie? (which he did in Canada with mother Shirley Douglas) and ?That Championship Season.? What I?d like to do now is find a new play I was excited about.?

LinkedIn Turns Its Contacts Section Into A Personal Assistant, With Google, Yahoo, Evernote & Outlook Apps Integration And A Standalone iPhone App
Make way for another major update to the LinkedIn platform: today the company is relaunching its Contacts section as a smart contact management system that will let users link up and integrate connections on LinkedIn with those from Google, Yahoo and Microsoft apps; Evernote; TripIt; your iPhone and more, and then serve as a “personal assistant” to help manage the interactions you make with them. Along with this, LinkedIn is launching a Contacts app for the iPhone — its third standalone app in addition to LinkedIn itself and business card scanner CardMunch, and the first time that LinkedIn has broken out one feature of its platform in its own app. Sachin Rekhi, the creator of Contacts, says that access to the new Contacts will come in stages: first to a limited number of users in the U.S., then to the rest of the country, and then to the rest of LinkedIn’s user base worldwide. The iPhone app, meanwhile, will be free to download and use with no specific plans for monetizing at the moment. As a point of comparison, the company’s new iPhone and Android apps, introduced last week, are now running a limited number of mobile ads. Contacts is the first big product to come out of LinkedIn’s October 2011 acquisition of Connected, the smart contacts management platform it bought to “revolutionize contact management” on LinkedIn. Rekhi, the product lead for Contacts, was one of the co-founders of Connected. The main idea behind it is to help LinkedIn become more of a platform for managing and interacting with people you know through work. In turn, this will (LinkedIn hopes) increase the amount of time that users spend on LinkedIn as a whole. While some of LinkedIn’s recent updates — for example, the new Recruiter pages — may be aimed more at “power users” (and paying users) of the platform, Contacts has a more universal feel to it. We all face the same problems: we connect with people in different ways online, and this is an offering to manage that in a better and smarter way. SAVAR, Bangladesh (AP) ? Rescuers using floodlights worked into the night Wednesday to attempt to free dozens of people believed trapped under an eight-story building housing garment factories that collapsed near Bangladesh's capital, killing at least 87 people.
In some places, they were able to cut holes into the jumbled mess of concrete with drilling machines or their bare hands, and pass water and flashlights to people trapped inside.
"I gave them whistles, water, torchlights, I heard them cry. We can't leave them behind this way," said fire official Abul Khayer. He said rescue operations would continue through the night because many survivors were still believed to be inside the collapsed building.
Less than five months after a factory fire killed 112 people, the disaster Wednesday again underscored the unsafe conditions in Bangladesh's massive garment industry. Workers said they had hesitated to go to work because the building had developed such large cracks the previous day that it had been reported on local news channels.
Abdur Rahim, who worked on the fifth floor, said a factory manager assured them there was no problem, so they went inside.
"We started working. After about an hour or so the building collapsed suddenly," he said. He next remembered regaining consciousness outside the building.
Home Minister Muhiuddin Khan Alamgir told reporters during a visit to the site that the building had violated construction codes and "the culprits would be punished."
Among the textile businesses in the building were Phantom Apparels Ltd., New Wave Style Ltd., New Wave Bottoms Ltd. and New Wave Brothers Ltd., which make clothing for brands including The Children's Place and Dress Barn.
Jane Singer, a spokeswoman for The Children's Place, said that "while one of the garment factories located in the building complex has produced apparel for The Children's Place, none of our product was in production at the time of this accident."
"Our deepest sympathies go out to the victims of this terrible tragedy and their families," Singer said in a statement.
Dress Barn said it to its knowledge it had "not purchased any clothing from that facility since 2010. We work with suppliers around the world to manufacture our clothing, and have a supply chain transparency program to protect the rights of workers and their safety."
Workers said they didn't know what specific clothing brands were being produced in the building because labels are attached after the products are finished.
Sumi, a 25-year-old worker who goes by one name, said she was sewing jeans on the fifth floor with at least 400 others when the building fell. "It collapsed all of a sudden," she said. "No shaking, no indication. It just collapsed on us."
She said she managed to reach a hole in the building through which rescuers pulled her out.
Reports suggested the death toll was likely to rise.
"We sent two people inside the building and we could rescue at least 20 people alive. They also told us that at least 100 to 150 people are injured and about 50 dead people are still trapped inside this floor," said Mohammad Humayun, a supervisor at one of the garment factories.
Tens of thousands of people gathered at the site, some of them weeping survivors, some searching for family members. Firefighters and soldiers using drilling machines and cranes worked with local volunteers in the search for survivors.
An enormous section of the concrete structure appeared to have splintered like twigs. Colorful sheets of fabric were tied to upper floors of the wreckage so those inside could climb or slide down and escape.
Rescuers carried the body of a young boy from the building, but it was not immediately clear what he had been doing inside. The building, in the Dhaka suburb of Savar, housed a bank and various shops in addition to the garment factories.
An arm jutted out of one section of the rubble. The lifeless body of a woman covered in dust could be seen in another.
Rahim said his mother and father, who worked with him in the factory, were trapped inside.
"I have no idea what is going on," he said.
Mosammat Khurshida wailed as she looked for her husband. "He came to work in the morning. I can't find him," she said. "I don't know where he is. He does not pick up his phone."
Zahidur Rahman, a spokesman for Enam Medical College and Hospital, said by Wednesday evening 87 people had been confirmed dead. Brig. Gen. Mohammed Siddiqul Alam Shikder said 600 people had been rescued.
At the morgue of the medical college, many wailed as they waited for the bodies of their loved ones. "Where's my mother? Where's my mother? Tell me, tell me, oh Allah, oh Allah," Rana Ahmed cried.
The November fire at the Tazreen garment factory drew international attention to working conditions in Bangladesh's $20 billion-a-year textile industry. The country has about 4,000 garment factories and exports clothes to leading Western retailers. The industry wields vast power in the South Asian nation.
Tazreen lacked emergency exits and its owner said only three floors of the eight-story building were legally built. Surviving employees said gates had been locked and managers had told them to go back to work after the fire alarm went off.

Logitech G19s Gaming Keyboard
Makers PC gaming peripherals are in the unenviable position of having to meet gamer's simultaneous demands for top-of-the-line products and innovative products that offer new and better ways to interact with technology. Finding the balancing point between these two concerns is a tricky business. For example, Logitech G19s gaming keyboard showcases the latest trend, the inclusion of an integrated display, providing a way to track and monitor in-game information or chat with teammates without monopolizing precious screen real-estate. It's an interesting idea we've seen once or twice before, but it's not quite clear whether this will be an improvement that sticks, or a gimmick that fizzles out.
Design
The Logitech G19s made for gamers, and it's evident just from looking at the keyboard. Instead of a plain looking key-covered slab, the keyboard has extra buttons and features sprouting from every spare bit of surface area. In addition to the usual keyboard and numeric pad, you'll find integrated media controls, including a roller knob for volume adjustment. On the left end of the keyboard, you'll find 12 programmable macro buttons to the left of the standard keyboard, similar to those seen on the Editors' Choice Corsair Vengeance K90 or Logitech's own G710+ Mechanical Gaming Keyboard. Each key can be programmed with up to three different macro commands, swappable at the touch of a button.
The keys themselves can be customized, with adjustable backlighting that lets you pick any of 16 million RGB color options. You can also set the backlight color to change when you switch the keyboard into gaming mode. An integrated gaming mode switch disables the Windows key to prevent any accidental keystrokes from pulling you out of your game, and shifts from one mode to another with a sliding switch, so there's no fear of switching modes with mistaken press of a button. Plus, by assigning a different backlight color to the game mode, you'll immediately know which mode you're in.
The keys themselves are molded plastic, coated in a UV coating to protect the keys against fading, with laser etched keycaps and two-colors?while most keys are black, the WASD and arrow keys have a silvery-grey colored keycaps for easier recognition. The keyboard also offers 110-key anti-ghosting, and six-key rollover, which will handle the multiple keystrokes of combos and rapid-fire attacks without stuttering.
The G19s has a plastic chassis, similar to that seen on the recent G710+, but instead of accenting the black plastic with orange, the G19s uses deep blue. On the underside of the keyboard, molded into the plastic chassis, are channels for managing cords for mice or headphones. A detachable wrist rest provides extra support for those who want it, and has a hydrophobic coating to resist smudging. The light plastic construction of the keyboard and wrist rest may not be to everyone's liking, but it wasn't a noticeable issue during my testing.
What was noticeable, however, was the style of key switch. Instead of using mechanical key switches?like those seen on the Corsair Vengeance K90 or the Logitech G710+?the G19s utilizes silicone membrane switches, which provide a markedly different feel. Unlike mechanical switches, which offer crisp tactile feedback, light actuating force, and register a keystroke with only a partial key press, membrane switches have a mushy feel, and require pressing each key all the way down, bottoming out the key well. While this may not be problematic in the short term, it makes for a slower, less comfortable experience, and requiring more effort for each keystroke will have an effect when you're playing League of Legends for three or four hours straight.
Features
The G19s has plenty of gamer-friendly features, but the most notable is the built-in LCD display, what Logitech calls the GamePanel. Through the small display you'll be fed a steady stream of information, from game stats to system data, VOIP information or video playback. The display is built into the keyboard with an adjustable angle hinge, so you can set the angle of the small screen to your liking. It's not the first gaming keyboard we've seen with an integrated display?we've seen similar in the Mad Catz S.T.R.I.K.E. 7 and the Razer DeathStalker Ultimate?but it is by far the most affordable.
The keyboard uses a lot of juice running that display, so the USB cable used to connect it to your PC also includes a connection for an AC power adapter?yes, you'll need to plug your keyboard into a wall outlet. Making up for this fact are two USB pass-thru connections on the keyboard, letting you plug in two additional USB devices without having to snake the cables around to plug into your desktop tower.
Logitech gives you plenty of ways to tweak and customize the G19s, and it does all of this customization through Logitech's Gaming Software 8.45. The downloadable software lets you tweak the lighting, record and edit macros, and select from pre-programmed profiles for a wide range of current games. The software is Windows-only (Windows 8/7/Vista) though, so Mac and Linux gamers are out of luck.
Performance
I tested the G19s keyboard both at work and play, and it was competent in both. As mentioned earlier, the use of membrane switches instead of mechanical does result in a slower, less efficient typing experience, but nothing too egregious?it simply puts the G19s on the same level as any other non-mechanical keyboard.
As a gaming keyboard, the G19s does especially well when the programmable macros are brought into play. MMOs, like World of Warcraft or DOTA 2 are ideal, while first person shooters, with their point and click actions, hardly use them. Recording macros is very simple; simply press the MR (Macro Record) button on the keyboard to begin recording a macro, and press it again to end recording. When tested in game, the performance was decent, but those who rely on rapid-fire attacks and flurries of activity may find themselves slowed by the membrane switches.
The integrated display suffers from the same problem as those on the Razer DeathStalker Ultimate and the Mad Catz S.T.R.I.K.E. 7, namely that the display is out of your immediate field of vision, requiring you to look away from your monitor in order to focus on a smaller image. It seems like several of the major game peripheral companies are experimenting with built-in keyboard displays of late, but it's a niche concept that has yet to really gain traction. Unless you earnestly want that extra display, your money might be better spent on a high-performance keyboard sans screen.
Conclusion
While the Logitech G19s does check off several items on any gamer's checklist, like programmable macros, customizable lighting, and an integrated display. What it's missing, however, keeps it from getting a strong recommendation. The decision to use membrane switches instead of mechanical will turn away many discerning buyers, while the plastic construction and the required AC adapter will put off even those who aren't picky about key-feel. As a result, the Corsair Vengeance K90 remains the Editors' Choice for gaming keyboards, while the slightly more expensive Razer DeathStalker Ultimate is our recommendation for those demanding an integrated display.

Galaxy goes green in burning stellar fuel
Apr. 23, 2013 ? Astronomers have spotted the "greenest" of galaxies, one that converts fuel into stars with almost 100-percent efficiency.
The findings come from NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE), NASA's Hubble Space Telescope and the IRAM Plateau de Bure interferometer in the French Alps.
"This galaxy is remarkably efficient," said Jim Geach of McGill University in Canada, lead author of a new study appearing in the Astrophysical Journal Letters. "It's converting its gas supply into new stars at the maximum rate thought possible."
Stars are formed out of collapsing clouds of gas in galaxies. In a typical galaxy, like the Milky Way, only a fraction of the total gas supply is actively forming stars, with the bulk of the fuel lying dormant. The gas is distributed widely throughout the galaxy, with most of the new stars being formed within discrete, dense 'knots' in the spiral arms.
In the galaxy, called SDSSJ1506+54, nearly all of the gas has been driven to the central core of the galaxy, where it has ignited in a powerful burst of star formation.
"We are seeing a rare phase of evolution that is the most extreme -- and most efficient -- yet observed," said Geach.
The results will provide a better understanding of how the central star-forming regions of galaxies take shape.
SDSSJ1506+54 jumped out at the researchers when they looked at it using data from WISE's all-sky infrared survey. Infrared light is pouring out of the galaxy, equivalent to more than a thousand billion times the energy of our sun. The galaxy is so distant it has taken the light nearly six billion years to reach us.
"Because WISE scanned the entire sky, it detected rare galaxies like this one that stand out from the rest," said Ned Wright of UCLA, the WISE principal investigator.
Hubble's visible-light observations revealed that the galaxy is extremely compact, with most of its light emanating from a region just a few hundred light-years across. That's a big star-making punch for such a little size.
"While this galaxy is forming stars at a rate hundreds of times faster than our Milky Way galaxy, the sharp vision of Hubble revealed that the majority of the galaxy's starlight is being emitted by a region with a diameter just a few percent that of the Milky Way," said Geach.
The team then used the IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer to measure the amount of gas in the galaxy. The ground-based telescope detected millimeter-wave light coming from carbon monoxide, an indicator of the presence of hydrogen gas, which is fuel for stars. Combining the rate of star formation derived with WISE, and the gas mass measured by IRAM, the scientists get a measure of the star-formation efficiency.
In regions of galaxies where new stars are forming, parts of gas clouds are collapsing due to gravity. When the gas is dense enough to squeeze atoms together and ignite nuclear fusion, a star is born. But this process can be halted by other newborn stars, as their winds and radiation blow the gas outward. The point at which this occurs sets the theoretical maximum for star formation. The galaxy SDSSJ1506+54 was found to be making stars right at this point, just before the gas clouds would otherwise be blown apart.
"We see some gas outflowing from this galaxy at millions of miles per hour, and this gas may have been blown away by the powerful radiation from the newly formed stars," said Ryan Hickox, an astrophysicist at Dartmouth College, Hanover, N.H., and a co-author on the study.
Why is SDSSJ1506+54 so unusual? Astronomers say they're catching the galaxy in a short-lived phase of evolution, possibly triggered by the merging of two galaxies into one. The star formation is so prolific that in a few tens of millions of years, the blink of an eye in a galaxy's life, the gas will be used up, and SDSSJ1506+54 will mature into a massive elliptical galaxy.
The scientists also used data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, the W.M. Keck Observatory on Mauna Kea, Hawaii, and the MMT Observatory on Mount Hopkins, Arizona.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) ? Matt Kenseth's race-winning car from Kansas failed inspection at NASCAR's Research and Development Center, The Associated Press has learned.
NASCAR officials were discussing Wednesday what penalties to levy against Kenseth and Joe Gibbs Racing, multiple people familiar with the inspection told the AP on the condition of anonymity because no decision has been made.
The engine, which is supplied by Toyota Racing Development out of Costa Mesa, Calif., failed because one of the eight connecting rods did not meet the minimum weight requirement. While it could be a quality control issue that did not provide Kenseth any advantage, NASCAR would still hold JGR and the No. 20 team responsible.
Penalties could include a loss of points for Kenseth, a fine for crew chief Jason Ratcliff and suspensions of six weeks or more for Ratcliff and other members of the JGR organization.
The failed inspection comes on the heels of NASCAR penalizing Penske Racing for using parts it said were unapproved in the rear suspension of its cars at Texas. NASCAR docked 25 points each from defending champion Brad Keselowski and teammate Joey Logano, fined the crew chiefs $100,000 each and suspended seven Penske employees for six races.
Penske Racing's appeal is scheduled for May 1.
NASCAR is far stricter about engine infractions and severely punished the last violator, Carl Long, who was found to have an illegal engine at the 2009 All-Star Race. Long was docked 200 points ? which would be about 50 points under the current points system ? fined $200,000 and suspended 12 races.
His suspension was reduced to eight races on appeal, but Long is unable to pay the fine and can't work in the Sprint Cup garage until he settles his debt with NASCAR.
Kenseth drove the No. 20 Toyota to his second win of the season Sunday in Kansas, where he held off Kasey Kahne of Hendrick Motorsports in the closing laps. It is standard procedure for the race winning engine to go back to Concord for a thorough inspection.

Philips Q1 profits fall on unfavorable comparison
AMSTERDAM (AP) ? Royal Philips NV, the maker of lights, home appliances and health-care equipment, says first quarter earnings fell on the back of soft sales and unfavorable annual comparisons.
Even so, the company says Monday its underlying margins have improved due to cutting costs.
In the first quarter, Philips made a net profit of 162 million euros ($212 million), down from 183 million euros in the first quarter of 2012 when it enjoyed 119 million euros worth of one-time gains, notably from the sale of its Senseo coffee maker brand. Sales fell 1 percent to 5.26 billion euros.
Chief executive Frans van Houten says the company is reiterating its view of a slow first half to 2013 due to "adverse" market trends, especially in Europe and the U.S.

Rhapsody Wasn't Happy, So Open Source Music Service Napster.fm Changes Its Name To Peer.fm
Last week, we told you about an open source alternative to music services such as Rdio and Spotify, called Napster.fm. The name alone got our attention, and after using it, there were a few features that were reminiscent of its predecessor, which made it even cooler. Today, the service is changing its name to Peer.fm to steer clear of legal issues, since Best Buy acquired the service and brand and shipped it over to Rhapsody in 2011, or whatever is left of it. Other than that, its been business as usual for its creator, Ryan Lester. Lester tell us that he’s had nearly 100k visitors to the site, with over 59,000 users actually trying out its features. Right now, nearly 1,500 users are registered and getting all of the benefits that come with that, including its social functionality that allows you to share tracks and playlists with friends. Most of the traffic is coming from outside of the United States, 64%, with areas of the world that don’t have access to Spotify bringing the heaviest users. We chatted with Lester about his project, which is noteworthy for its open source nature, alone. He told us that he’d love to make the service available to mobile users, but is focusing on translating the service for as many languages as possible: TC: What has been the most used feature on the service thus far? Ryan Lester: Well, not surprisingly, just playing music. It’s looking like the more social-oriented features are starting to pick up some steam, but just the core music-playing functionality easily tops the rest in usage. TC: There are a lot of music services out there, why did people gravitate to yours? Ryan Lester: I think there are a few important reasons for this: 1. It’s definitely something cool and new that people into music will want to try at least once, and being open source earns a certain level of cachet and goodwill. 2. Despite still being in Beta, the quality of the software is definitely in the same league as that of its major competitors (e.g. Spotify, Google Music); on top of that, it adds a few unique features of its own like syncing music between users in real-time. 3. Napster had a cool social element which hadn’t really been precisely replicated by newer services until Peer.fm showed up. In 2012, China?s international travel expenditures exceeded $100 billion, #1 worldwide, and its domestic rental business is expected to grow more than 15% annually through 2016.

Under the agreement, which is subject to normal closing conditions, CAR will be granted a license for an initial 5 year term to operate on behalf of Hertz in China. CAR will develop a network of full-service Hertz premium locations in key cities to complement CAR?s expanding location footprint. Taken together, the Hertz/CAR services will encompass self-drive and chauffeur-driven rentals, as well as short, medium and long-term vehicle rentals and leases. Hertz will provide CAR with access to a full array of services to support their rapidly expanding market presence, services which meet Hertz?s industry-leading standards. These include access to Hertz?s operational expertise, reservation capabilities, and fleet management efficiencies.
