The Writing Of 1,2,1,2 | David Chislett

by David Chislett on Jul 8th, 2013

In about 2008 I realised that if I was ever going to be truly happy, I needed to follow my heart and do what I was really passionate about. This is a bit weird considering I had been working for myself in the music industry full-time since 1995!

The truth is that by then I was running a music speciality PR company. It was doing pretty well. My clients included Goldfish, The Dirty Skirts and Fuzigish as well as the Edgars Music Series and others. But the truth was that I was waking up every morning going, ?What am I doing with my life!??!?!??

After some serious soul searching and hard-question asking (that?s another entire post!) I emerged with the understanding that I had to follow my dream. This had been my dream since I was about ten: when I first started writing creatively: to be a writer. The question I was asked: if you wanted to be a writer, what are you doing today to make that happen?

The answer was of course nothing. Not writing one creative word at all. So first that had to change. But I also realised that just writing was not the answer. I needed to be aiming at obtaining a career, a sustainable position in the world as a writer, which would also involve speaking? training, key notes and so on.

Hence a to-do list was born. I asked myself, what do I have that I can start work on today that would become a book?
Number one was easy: a collection of short stories. I started writing those in 1st year university (more coming on that soon)
Number two seemed easy: I would resurrect the Urban series and do Urban 4
Number 3 was interesting. I would write a guide book for the business side of the music industry.

Number 3 scared the crap out of me. The notion was born out a discussion I had with Deon Maas a few years previous. I had written a novel about a band that try and make it big in South Africa. I asked Deon to read it for some early comments. His reaction was, well, you?ve got two books here. A novel and a guide book for bands. My advice to do the guide book! This was in like 2004!

Why hadn?t I four years later? One word answer: FEAR

Who was I to write an advice book for artists in South Africa? Most of our industry is black and into urban music. I am white and grew up on rock. I have never managed nor helped create a huge star. I was well known in my niche, but no further, and it was a small niche. Essentially I had a long list of perfectly rational, carefully worked out list of reasons why I should NOT do the book. Also I knew a few other people who had muttered about doing it, but never did.

But, once it got to 2009 and the short story book was out no-one else had released such a book. And no-one else seemed likely to. Jonathan Shaw had his weighty, university level book out, but already my idea was way different. So I grabbed my nuts in my hands, took a deep breath and said I would do it.

I sat down and wrote a list of what I thought were the most important things any beginner artist needed to know. From playing live, to their song-writing rights and dealing with management. I fiddled those around until I thought I had a logical order. I asked for input from my bother Simon and my friend Bill Botes as well as Deon Maas. It was my brother Simon who also suggested the interview side bars, the heavy use of graphics and photos? He said if it is going to be educational and WORK, it cannot be dull and boring. It must leap off the page. How right he was! Then I broke each section down into parts so I could get down to micro detail level. And then I started to write it.

And writing, I realised that I knew way, way more than I was giving myself credit for. Also that working in the underground with no budget, no scene and very little indeed to work with had taught me a lot about how to scrap and scrape a career together. And that in actual fact, I must understand business because, since 1988 I had been dealing and working with bands that had never made any money really and yet, I was making a living. I had a career? surely this could be shared?

I also realised that I did not know a lot: I had to research and interview and double check a lot of stuff when it came to rights, publishing, SAMRO etc. This is when I realised that I, in actual fact, had never really been a very good artist manager. I had been more like a glorified road manager and booking agent. (But that is yet another story)

It was my father who suggested the workshops. David Chislett senior spent a lot of his career in training: writing manuals, designing programmes and training management candidates in the insurance industry. He saw in the book the potential for it to become a training manual, a source-book for an educational programme. My friend Aasifah Omar kindly provided me with the advice and document templates to help me to start to turn the book into those workshops.

I was doing workshops before the book even eventually came out in 2010. My oldest brother Andrew is the reason the book came at out at all after he offered to fund me to publish independently. The book truly turned out to be a family effort, a first for too!

My experience of doing these 1,2,1,2 and Start Smart workshops will be the subject of my next blog.

Toyota Prius passes 3 million in global sales

Toyota's Prius hybrid passed another milestone in June, securing its place at the top of the hybrid vehicle market. In terms of fuel efficiency and affordability, the Prius has come a long way over the past decade. ?

That figure is three million--the cumulative global sales total through June, for all Prius models since the car debuted in Japan in 1997.

Since then, the Prius has gone through three main generations, with other models--the Prius V wagon, Prius C subcompact and Prius Plug-In Hybrid--all adding to its impressive tally.

It's the second significant milestone passed in less than a year, Toyota announcing ain April that it had sold five million Toyota and Lexus hybrids in total, since that first 1997 Prius.

Such a figure puts the Prius' own success into perspective. While Toyota now produces a wide range of hybrid vehicles, it's the core line which still sells in the greatest numbers, and in certain locales--California being a prime example--it counts itself among the highest-selling cars of any type.

The car itself has changed significantly since that original car, first seen in the U.S. in 2000 as a 2001 model-year car.

Its 1.5-liter Hybrid Synergy Drive engine has expanded to 1.8 liters, while the car itself has grown from a large subcompact to something between a compact and midsize car--it's classed as midsize by the EPA thanks to its large interior volume.

Is the 2001-2003 Toyota Prius A Good Used Buy?

Despite this growth, the later car is significantly cleaner and more fuel efficient. Since 2007's EPA testing revisions, the Mk1 Prius is rated at 42 mpg city, 41 highway and 41 combined.

While those numbers are still better than many brand-new vehicles on sale today, the 2013 Prius is better still--51 mpg city, 48 highway and 50 combined. Such is the march of progress, as the latest Prius is also quicker, more refined and more comfortable than before. And while the looks don't suit everyone, many would agree it's easier on the eye, too.

The familiar Prius shape is likely to continue for some time to come, as recent spy shots show--though the current car's quirky interior looks like becoming more convetional when the 2015 car hits the market.

We wouldn't be surprised to see the fourth-gen car matching the 1,688,000 total sales of the 3rd-gen model, nor the 1,192,000 of the 2nd-gen Prius, either--hybrids are only getting more popular.

In fact, as far as hybrid sales are concerned, other carmakers have plenty of catching up to do...

Oregon May Soon Begin Tuition-Free College Plan

ABC News is reporting that the Oregon state legislature has unanimously approved a plan to provide free tuition to students while they attend community college and public university. The groundbreaking plan is designed to help students hit by the recent doubling of student loan interest rates.

The program is called ?Pay It Forward, Pay It Back?. Its structure is fairly straightforward. It will allow students to go to a public university or community college tuition-free with a binding contract that they will pay a small, fixed percentage of their annual adjusted gross incomes after they graduate from college.

The beauty of the program is that it was conceived and proposed by students. Barbara Dudley, professor with Portland State University?s College of Urban and Public Affairs: Hatfield School of Government, has been heavily involved with the planning and proposing of the program. It was her students that came up with the idea. They worked with Rep. Michael Dembrow, as well as he Oregon Students Association.

Dembrow presented the idea as a House Bill. State senator Mark Hass, chair of the senate education committee, sponsored the bill in the senate.

One of the proposals that Dudley?s students ran with is that all community college students pay 1.5 percent of their incomes for 20 years, and all four-year public university students pay 3 percent for 20 years.

?Essentially what it does is allows you not to carry a debt load,? Dudley said. ?It?s not a debt that you graduate with. Your debt-to-credit ratio is not mucked up and you can participate in the economy.?

The average college debt that a student walked out with in 2013 was $35,200. If a state university graduate makes $80,000 per year (AGI) after graduating, and pays 3 percent each year as agreed, that is a payback of $48,000 over the 20-year life of the ?loan?. There is, of course, inflation to be factored in. But there are also cost-saving measures that the states can implement with colleges that could make the return on investment even more profitable. If the students stay in Oregon, they contribute to the economy of the state. If they leave, they are still paying back their ?tuition?. Meanwhile, they have had no adverse listings on their credit, and their payment remains a percentage, not a prohibitive amount with interest tacked on.

28 injured at California fireworks show

Updated yesterday at 2:12 PM

SIMI VALLEY, Calif. (AP) -- More than two dozen people were injured when a wood platform holding live fireworks tipped over, sending the pyrotechnics into a crowd at a Fourth of July show northwest of Los Angeles, authorities said Friday.

Between 8,000 and 10,000 revelers were settling into their seats for the fireworks extravaganza at a Simi Valley park Thursday night when the spectacle of lights that were supposed to be launched in the sky never took off. Instead, a bright plume of red and white bursts spread across the ground, injuring 28 people and sending others fleeing for safety.

Police were still investigating what led to the explosion, but they said early indications show a platform designed and built to hold the fireworks gave way.

"For some unknown reasons the structure that holds these ordinances collapsed and caused them to be firing into the crowd," Simi Valley police Cmdr. Stephanie Shannon.

Four people were listed in serious condition, but their injuries were not considered life-threatening. Sixteen more were taken to hospitals with minor to moderate injuries. The remainder were treated at the park where emergency crews, already on hand as a safety precaution, set up a triage area.

Meanwhile, a worker at a fireworks show in North Myrtle Beach, S.C., was injured Thursday evening when a shell exploded prematurely. The explosion at the Cherry Grove Pier caused the show to end early, after just six minutes, and left a hole in the pier.

In Seattle, fire investigators blamed illegal fireworks for a blaze that damaged 14 boats at a storage facility as the city's official fireworks display was exploding nearby, causing an estimated $1.5 million in damages. One firefighter received minor injuries fighting the fire.

The California mishap came a year after a fireworks show in San Diego exploded in about 20 seconds and sent multiple bulb-shaped explosions over the bay. The show's producer blamed a "technical glitch," saying an error in its computer system caused tens of thousands of fireworks on four barges to go off simultaneously with a single command.

A video clip of the Simi Valley accident that aired on KCAL-TV shows a pair of firework blasts at or near the ground. Another clip, posted on YouTube and shot from a distance, shows three ground-level bursts. The fireworks continue for almost another minute before stopping.

"There was a big boom, everybody started running down the street, people were screaming," Justice Allen, 17, of Simi Valley told the Los Angeles Times. "Everybody was just terrified. People hid in bushes."

Authorities estimate people were 900 feet away from where the fireworks were being launched. One police officer who ran into the crowd when the blasts occurred had shrapnel tear through his leather belt and his clothing, Shannon said. He had minor injuries to his back.

Shannon said most people responded admirably and left in an orderly fashion. A bomb squad was at the park to deactivate the remainder of the fireworks.

Shannon said the fireworks primarily shot in one direction.

"They are going to travel the same distance across the park as they would in the air," she said. "The ones that had actually ignited that had to run their fuse were going directly into the crowd."

The annual July Fourth celebration has been sponsored by the city and the local Rotary Club for the past 43 years.? Shannon said she had no information about the company hired for the fireworks show.

Simi Valley, home to the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, is about 40 miles northwest of Los Angeles.

OWN to air 'All My Children,' 'One Life to Live'

(AP) ? "All My Children" and "One Life to Live" are returning to TV.

Oprah Winfrey's OWN network says it's acquired the first 40 episodes of the daytime dramas' revival on The Online Network. They'll air Monday through Thursday for a 10-week period beginning July 15.

In a statement Wednesday, OWN President Erik Logan said: "These shows have proven to be very popular with a significant, loyal fan base."

When the two soaps were canceled by ABC in 2011, fans begged Winfrey to give them a second life on OWN.

She responded by releasing a video message on her website saying she couldn't save the shows because "there just are not enough people who are home in the daytime to watch them."
