10 Of The Worst Anti-LGBT Moments Of The Week, October 27 -- November 3

  • Hurricane Sandy Blamed On Gays, Obama And Romney By Preacher

One right-wing Christian preacher blamed Hurricane Sandy on the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community. In a wordy and occasionally rambling blog on his website, chaplain John McTernan seems to link Hurricane Sandy (and a number of other recent weather-related trends and natural disasters) on LGBT people and President Barack Obama's recent backing of marriage equality. While most of McTernan's wrath is directed at Obama, he has some choice words for GOP candidate Mitt Romney, too. "God is systematically destroying America," McTernan writes. "Just look at what has happened this year." Read the full story here.

  • Hurricane Sandy Was God's 'Punishment' For New York's Marriage Equality Law, Rabbi Claims

Rabbi Noson Leiter of Torah Jews for Decency called the hurricane "divine justice? for New York?s same-sex marriage legislation, which was introduced in 2011. Noting that "the Great Flood in the time of Noah was...triggered by the recognition of same-gender marriages," Leiter said, "The Lord will not bring another flood to destroy the entire world, but He could punish particular areas with a flood." To read the full story, click here.

  • Shocking Footage Emerges of Mitt Romney Spouting His Bigoted Bile Against Gays

In his latest blog post, HuffPost Gay Voices Editor at Large Michelangelo Signorile quoted Mitt Romney making shocking remarks that were highlighted in investigative reporter Murray Waas' Boston Globe story last week. Now, for the first time in this campaign, video has surfaced of Romney making those bigoted claims about gay parents while pushing his heartless policy against their children. To read the full story, click here.

  • High School Students Told To Remove Pro-Gay Rainbow T-Shirts

A group of Celina High School students are at the center of a contentious debate on free speech after nearly two dozen students were told to remove their shirts that support gay rights. It all started last week when two girls celebrated the school's "Twin Day" by wearing shirts reading "Lesbian 1" and "Lesbian 2." School officials quickly told the teens to take the shirts off, according to U.S. News & World Report. In a show of solidarity, a group of about 20 students returned to school this week wearing shirts that read "I support? Express yourself," with the image of a rainbow. To read the full story, click here.

  • Anti-Gay Texas Teen Is NOM's New Spokesman

The Texas teen whose anti-gay views got him suspended from school last year is now an unofficial spokesperson of sorts for the National Organization for Marriage (NOM). Dakota Ary -- who reportedly declared "I'm a Christian and, to me, being homosexual is wrong" in reaction to a photograph of two men kissing presented during a German class at his Fort Worth high school -- stars in NOM's new "Marriage Anti-Defamation Alliance" video. "I've been called, like, the Hitler of our time...people who've said they want to commit suicide because I have breath in my body," Ary, who was 14 at the time of his suspension last year, says in the clip. To read the full story, click here.

  • Sociologist Behind Anti-Gay Parenting Study Defends Research

The Texas sociologist who sparked controversy earlier this year with a heavily-criticized study of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) parenting is speaking out about his findings, but whether his remarks truly constitute a defense is questionable. Mark Regnerus, an associate professor of sociology at the University of Texas at Austin, tells Focus on the Family's Citizen magazine that while he stands behind his work, he would do a few things differently, particularly in terms of language used in the findings, if given the opportunity. "I?d be more careful about the language I used to describe people whose parents had same-sex relationships," Regenus told the magazine. "I said 'lesbian mothers' and 'gay fathers,' when in fact, I don?t know about their sexual orientation; I do know about their same-sex relationship behavior." To read the full story, click here.

  • Italian Reveals Staggering Level Of Homophobia

Seventy-three percent of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) population has experienced some form of discrimination or prejudice, predominantly in the academic environment, according to a new Italian study. Part of the "Niso" project against discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people, the poll's findings were released Wednesday in Rome. Two of these studies focused on the province of Rome: one among the members of the homosexual community (391 interviewees who identified themselves as LGBT individuals) and one among students (741 participants) from Belgium, Estonia, Italy and Holland, along with three academic institutions in Rome. To read the full story, click here.

  • Alleged Anti-Gay Assault Caught On Tape In Jamaica

Grainy amateur video that allegedly shows a young gay man being beaten at a leading Jamaican university is making the blogosphere rounds. As The Gleaner reports, two unnamed men were being held by officials at the University of Technology (UTech) in Kingston after being caught in what is described as "a compromising position." Though details of the alleged incident are scarce, the circulated video shows one of the gay men appearing to be kicked, punched and slapped by two security personnel while a third guard looks on. Meanwhile, an angry mob gathers outside. To read the full story, click here.

  • Gay Democratic Congressman Linked To Child Molester In GOP TV Ad

Republicans are airing a TV ad in Rhode Island linking freshman Democratic Rep. David Cicilline to a child molester and a murderer he defended when he was a lawyer two decades ago, the Associated Press reports. "What do a child molester, a murderer and a violent attacker all have in common? Defense attorney David Cicilline," the narrator says in the spot sponsored by the National Republican Congressional Committee. The spot began running this week and is designed to boost GOP hopeful Brendan Doherty, the former head of the state police who is making his first run for office. To read the full story, click here.

  • Westboro Baptist Church Thanks God As Hurricane Sandy Pummels East Coast

Shirley Phelps-Roper, daughter of Westboro pastor Fred Phelps, has spewed a series of tweets about Hurricane Sandy since the storm first brewed in the Caribbean last week. "God sent the whirlwind. #ThankGodForRighteousJudgment," Phelps-Roper tweeted after deaths were announced in Cuba. She went on to target specific states in Sandy's path, including Connecticut and Delaware, both of which have legalized same-sex marriage. The Westboro Baptist Church, an independent Baptist church based in Topeka, Kan., is infamous for protesting funerals of members of the armed forces because gays are allowed to serve. Click here to read the full story.
