Why Eat Peeps at Easter?

Along with Easter comes a barrage of Easter candy, perhaps none as much a pop-culture curiosity as Peeps. In a 2004 Explainer, Rachel Deahl researched Peeps' ties to Easter and our fascination with the confection. The article is printed below.

A pagan connection to this Easter confection

A pagan connection to this Easter confection

This Easter Americans will consume an estimated 700 million Marshmallow Peeps. Some will also be consumed by them?fanatics maintain Web sites featuring everything from Peep erotica, dubbed "Peep Smut," to an inventive online movie called "Lord of the Peeps," and each year at least a few newspapers print odes to the candy. But for all the fascination with Peeps, it's never been clear why the sugary treats are associated with Easter. The marshmallow rabbits represent the Easter Bunny, but what do marshmallow chicks have to do with the resurrection of Christ?

As it turns out, chicks have little to do with Jesus and a lot to do with spring. In 1917, Sam Born, a Russian immigrant, opened a small candy shop in New York City that sold chocolates and other confections. When the company grew, Born relocated it to Bethlehem, Pa., and named it Just Born, after a slogan he'd coined to advertise the freshness of his wares. Then, in 1953, Just Born bought a local Pennsylvania confectioner called the Rodda Candy Company.

Although Just Born acquired Rodda for its jelly-bean-making capabilities, the Born family was fascinated with the three-dimensional marshmallow Easter chicks, called Peeps, that Rodda was also making at the time. Lauren Easterly, the Peeps brand manager at Just Born, said that a group of women at Rodda made Peeps by hand in the back of the factory. In 1953, it took Rodda 27 hours to make one Peep. Just Born mechanized Peep production and was able to bring the confection to consumers on a mass scale by 1954.

No one at Just Born could explain why the Rodda Candy Company thought yellow chicks made for appropriate Easter candies. Company spokesmen also couldn't confirm whether Rodda was making marshmallow confections in other shapes in 1953, although Rodda did manufacture marshmallow eggs at one point. Whatever shapes Rodda was making, however, Just Born zeroed in on the chick; the company didn't start distributing the marshmallow candy in other shapes (such as bunnies) until the 1960s.

Candy historians speculate that the Peeps' link to Easter has more to do with the pagan origins of the holiday than its Christian roots. Eggs, and consequently chicks, are a long-standing symbol of fertility and rebirth, an appropriate image for a holiday that celebrates the coming of spring. Originally part of a pagan fertility ritual symbolizing new life, the egg became incorporated into Easter as pagan rites were absorbed into Christianity with the Christianization of Central Europe.

That the Rodda Candy Company was based in Pennsylvania is also of note because German immigrants, many of whom settled in the state, are largely credited with popularizing the Easter Bunny tradition in America. Eastre was a Teutonic goddess of the dawn who was able to change a bird into a rabbit, a creature known for its fertility. In the 19th century, Germans gave a related gift during the Easter season: a basket of eggs with figures of bunnies placed in it. The Easter basket, and the Easter Bunny, really became popular in this country following the Civil War, and as one candy historian noted, it would have required no great leap of imagination for Rodda (or earlier candy makers) to place a few chicks among the eggs.

Louisville's Ware breaks leg in tourney game

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? School officials say that Louisville guard Kevin Ware has been taken to a local hospital after sustaining a broken lower right leg during the first half of Sunday's Midwest Regional final against Duke.

The injury occurred with 6:33 left in the first half as Duke's Tyler Thornton made a 3-pointer. Ware tried to contest the shot and his leg buckled when he landed, bending almost at a right angle.

Louisville spokesman Kenny Klein said hospital officials told the school that Ware was "resting comfortably" and that the pain is "under control."

Klein also said that a team of doctors is being assembled to treat Ware but was uncertain whether that meant Ware would undergo surgery in Indianapolis at Methodist Hospital.

'Easter eggs' are on the Internet all year long

Internet

Easter eggs ? also known as undocumented features? are all over the Internet. All you have to do is figure out the secret that'll let you access them. And lucky for you, we've rounded up some of our favorites.

Do the YouTube shake!
Remember the Harlem Shake? It was trendy about fifty Internet years ago. And even the folks at YouTube got in on the craze. If you enter "do the harlem shake" into the Search box, you'll find that the entire YouTube page suddenly starts dancing.

The ratings go to eleven
IMDb, the Internet Movie Database, gets into the spirit of the movie "This Is Spinal Tap" by displaying the flick's rating out of a possible eleven stars, rather than the traditional ten.

Let me calculate that for you
The calculator feature built into Google Search has all sorts of little Easter eggs. It accepts measurements in "donkeypower" (one donkey power is equivalent to 250.033167 watts, in case you're wondering) and other uncommon units, it knows that the "answer to life the universe and everything" is 42, and it will even tell you that "the loneliest number" is one.

Oh, and if you happen to type out the Batman Function (also known as the Batman Curve), Google will actually graph it out for you.

One does not simply walk into Google Maps
If you try to get walking directions from the Shire to Mordor on Google Maps, you'll see a little warning: "Use caution ? One does not simply walk into Mordor." Attempting to get from China to Japan with Maps guidance will mean you have to "Jet ski across the Pacific Ocean" at one point.

Lucky ducky!
An archive of Google Doodles ? redesigned versions of the Google homepage logo ? can be accessed right from the main Google page. Just click the "I'm Feeling Lucky" button without entering a Search query.

Employee appreciation
If you click on the little whitespace below the copyright notice on Amazon's site directory, you'll see a hidden page on which Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos expresses his gratitude to an employee.

Google ain't the only place with Easter eggs!
Typing "to be or not to be," "how much wood would a woodchuk chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood" and similar queries into knowledge engine Wolfram Alpha will lead to appropriately cheeky answers.

Why Do We Eat Chocolate Bunnies During Easter - Easter Food ...

This Sunday families across the country will gather together for the annual Easter feast. Children will search for colored eggs containing chocolate and jelly beans hidden by a rabbit in a basket filled with fake green grass, adults will nibble on hot cross buns, and all will come together for a meal of ham or lamb. On any other Sunday, this might seem odd. But on Easter all of these things are entirely appropriate. But why?

Why We Eat Lamb

Alfred Portale's Lamb

Though it may not achieve the same popularity as milk chocolate eggs, lamb is the most traditional of Easter eats. According to the Oxford Companion to Food, its significance is based both in Christianity and Paganism, when Easter did not exist but a celebration of the spring equinox did. In Christian theology, lamb symbolizes Jesus' self sacrifice as the "Lamb of God." But the concept of a sacrificial lamb dates back to Pagan times when lamb symbolized spring, as that was when lambs were ready for slaughter.

Why We Eat Ham

Easter Ham Martha Stewart

Since it was readily available than lamb in America, ham became the Easter meal of choice early on in American Easter history. It didn't hurt that back in pre-refrigeration days, meat was cured in the fall and ready to eat in the spring, making it the perfect post-Lenten course. Ham was also adopted as the meat mascot by early Christians, according to FoodTimeline.org.

Why We Eat Eggs

Painted Easter Eggs

These days it wouldn't be Easter without eggs. Whether they're plastic and hidden in a bush, foil-covered and made of chocolate, or cooked in a traditional style, eggs are the ultimate symbol of secular Easter (apart from that bunny with a basket). Eggs join lamb as a symbol of spring and rebirth. But eggs also have a Christian connection. According to The Catholic Encyclopedia, in early Christianity, eggs were one of the forbidden items to eat during Lent, so they were one of the first things consumed in celebration of the end of Lent. Eggs also symbolized the rebirth of mankind through Jesus' self-sacrifice.

Why We Eat Hot Cross Buns

Hot Cross Buns

Food Timeline quotes An A-Z of Food & Drink as saying that, "The practice of eating special small cakes at the time of the Spring festival seems to date back at least to the ancient Greeks." Hot cross buns are a particular Easter specialty, notably because they have a cross on top in frosting, symbolizing, of course, Christianity and the cross on which Jesus died. The BBC writes that sharing one of these buns with a friend on Good Friday will cement the friendship. According to the Oxford Companion to Food, bread is a common and ancient object of sacrifice. The Egyptians used to offer up small cakes marked with the symbols of gods. The Greeks and Romans had similar practices. The Saxons ate buns that honored the goddess of light, Eostre. Sound familiar? It is the origin of the word Easter.

Why We Eat Chocolate Bunnies

Chocolate Easter Bunny

Probably the strangest item on the Easter menu is the chocolate bunny. When did the bunny hop on the Easter scene in the form of chocolate? First, an explanation of the bunny: According to Gourmet, in pre-Christian times, people worshiped the the ancient goddess of fertility, Eostre. Rabbits were also depicted as a symbol of spring and fertility. It wasn't until the 19th century that the bunny appeared on the Easter table. Germans were the first to create a confection out of this adorable creature, making pastries and hiding them in nests for children to find. When the Germans came to the United States, they brought this tradition. Whitman's Chocolates first produced chocolate bunnies in 1842, and though it took a few decades, other companies like Lindt, Bortz, Cadbury, and Dove also began cranking out the chocolate bunny. According to the National Confectioners Association, 90 million chocolate Easter bunnies are produced for the holiday each year, with 76 percent of all people eating the ears on the bunny first. The only question left is: Why do we eat Peeps?

Songkick Concerts (for Android)

Hardcore music fans have their beloved bands' tour schedules seemingly imprinted on their souls, but those of us with more casual devotions may have trouble keeping tabs on our favorite artists' performance dates. Enter Songkick Concerts, a slick Android app (free) (also available on iOS) that notifies you when an artist plans to come to your town. Concertgoers, consider Songkick Concerts a must-have download.

How Songkick Concerts Works
Songkick Concerts lets you obtain concert information in two ways. One option is the active way. Tap the "+" icon, key in an artist's name, tap the search button, select the artist's database entry, and then tap "Track." You'll know that an artist is on tour if you see a red "On Tour" sash adorning the listing. If the artists aren't on tour, Songkick Concerts simply displays "No Upcoming Events."

If tapping icons is a bit too much exertion, you can simply let Songkick Concerts dig up tour information for you. When you launch the Songkick Concerts, the app automatically scans your device's music file library (as well as Last.FM and Pandora mobile apps) for artists to match against its database?and it works surprisingly well. Nine of the ten music tracks on my Samsung Galaxy Note II?pulled an artist entry?even a song from the relatively unknown Death Grips. Songkick Concerts didn't recognize a Heems track, but overall I was impressed that the app has its ear tuned to both popular and underground acts.

The Songkick Concerts Experience
The Songkick Concerts homescreen features three areas: "Artists," "Calendar," and "Locations."

"Artists" displays a thumbnail grid of performer images showing performers you manually added and those which Songkick automatically generated based on your music file collection. When you bring a finger to the icon of an artist on tour, Songkick Concerts displays the tour dates, tour venues, and locations. Tapping the entry takes you to a second screen where you can let others know if you're attending ("I'm going"/"I might go"), check out the venue location on Google Maps, view other artists in the event lineup, purchase tickets (from the likes of LiveNation, Stubhub!, and others sellers), and view other Songkick Concert users who plan to attend the same show.

"Calendar" displays the shows you may attend and artist tour dates. It also lets you add a date to Google Calendar if you prefer to house tour information there?a nice touch. "Locations" lets you add cities that you're willing to visit to attend shows. For example, I inputted Boston, New York, and Philadelphia, so Songkick Concerts only displayed tour dates from artists who are planning to appear in those cities. Songkick Concerts makes finding concerts very simple.

Party On, Wayne
Whether you're a concert frequenter or simply want to see a live music show once in a while, Songkick Concerts is the Android app to download. Songkick Concerts not only lets you view when your favorite performers are coming to town, but lets you purchase tickets, too. It quickly became my go-to app whenever the idea of attending a live show popped into in my head. Music fans: get this app.

Fungi pull carbon into northern forest soils

Organisms living on tree roots do lion?s share of sequestering carbon

By Meghan Rosen

Sequestration may be questionable fiscal policy, but it means good news in the context of carbon cycles. Vast underground networks of fungi may sequester heaps of carbon in boreal forest soil, a study suggests. By holding onto the element, the fungi do the environment a favor by preventing carbon dioxide from escaping into the atmosphere and warming the planet.

Mycorrhizal fungi, which grow underground in and on tree roots, hold 50 to 70 percent of the total carbon stored in leaf litter and soil on forested islands in Sweden, researchers report March 28 in Science. The new findings poke holes in a long-held idea that carbon in boreal forests accumulates mainly above ground in a litter of pine needles, mosses and leaves. The researchers suggest instead that trees direct carbon deeper into the soil via their root systems.

?It?s hard to quantify how important mycorrhizal fungi are in ecosystems,? says forest ecologist Erik Hobbie of the University of New Hampshire in Durham, who was not involved with the study. ?This paper presents hard evidence about their importance.?

Trees suck carbon dioxide from the air and turn the carbon into sugars to fuel growth of branches, leaves and roots. Because trees are so good at capturing carbon dioxide, ecosystems stash loads of carbon in forests. Cold boreal forests are thought to be carbon-storing superstars mostly because litter stacks up on their floors and takes a long time to decompose. These forests stow away nearly a quarter of all the carbon stocked in the Earth?s land surfaces. ?

But scientists have not understood where exactly trees put their carbon. The issue becomes important when researchers build computer simulations that track carbon cycling. ?People talk about how plants shuttle half their carbon to the belowground root system, but it has kind of been neglected in carbon storage models,? says study coauthor Karina Clemmensen, a fungal ecologist at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Uppsala.

Clemmensen and colleagues measured the age and accumulation of carbon in soil samples from 30 islands sprinkled across two lakes in northern Sweden. At each island, Clemmensen?s team plunged long, hollow tubes with sharpened ends into the ground to extract soil cores.

Since new, carbon-rich litter settles layer by layer on forest floors, prevailing wisdom suggested the scientists would ?find older carbon as they went down. But instead, researchers found stores of young carbon deep beneath the surface. Only sugars shipped down trees to their roots could explain the young carbon?s presence in soil below ground, says Clemmensen.

Next, her team analyzed DNA and fungal molecules in the soil samples. Beneath the forest floor, soil was packed with traces of mycorrhizal fungi, which stretch long filamentous fingers through the earth and sop up water and nutrients. The fungi pull in carbon in the form of sugars from tree roots. Above ground, fungi that break down leaf litter dominated.

The study?s findings could help global carbon modelers tweak their simulations, says climatologist Victor Brovkin of the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology in Hamburg. ?How to model soil carbon is poorly understood,? he says. ?That?s why this new evidence is important to us.?

Golds, banks pull TSX lower on weak data, Cyprus; RIM gains

TORONTO (Reuters) - Canada's main stock index fell on Thursday, led by declines in gold shares that followed the bullion price lower and in financial stocks, as weak U.S. economic data and worries about spillover effects of the Cyprus crisis deepened investor gloom. A rise in BlackBerry after the smartphone maker reported a surprise quarterly profit offset some of the losses.

Canada economy rebounds in January after weak spell

OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canada's economy bounced back in January with 0.2 percent growth following the weakest two quarters since the 2008-09 recession thanks to solid manufacturing, mining and an end to a work stoppage in professional ice hockey, Statistics Canada said on Thursday. Analysts surveyed by Reuters had expected a 0.1 percent increase in monthly gross domestic product following a 0.2 percent decline in December.

BlackBerry posts surprise profit, but subscriber base down

TORONTO (Reuters) - BlackBerry reported a surprise quarterly profit on Thursday and said it shipped 1 million of its all-new Z10 smartphones in the period, but the company has yet to convince some investors that its turnaround plan is succeeding. The Canadian smartphone maker's shares were up nearly 2 percent in early trading, but had jumped of more than 10 percent immediately after the results came out. Some investors focused on a decline in the company's subscriber base, a possible threat to its long-term growth prospects.

Patient Cypriots line up as banks reopen

NICOSIA (Reuters) - Cypriots lined up at banks as they reopened on Thursday under tight controls imposed on transactions, but there was no sign of a run on deposits that had been feared after the government was forced to accept a stringent EU rescue package. Banks were shut almost two weeks ago as the government negotiated a 10 billion euro ($13 billion) international bailout to avert a national bankruptcy, the first in Europe's single currency zone to impose losses on bank depositors.

Boeing CEO confident that 787 battery fix will work

Total to book $1.65 billion first-quarter loss on Canada project exit

PARIS (Reuters) - Total will book a $1.65 billion first-quarter loss on its withdrawal from a long-delayed oil sands project in Canada, it said on Thursday, a day after partner Suncor pulled the plug on the plant citing lower potential returns. French oil major Total said it has sold its 49 percent stake in the Voyageur Upgrader project in northern Alberta to Canada's largest oil company Suncor Energy , which holds the remaining 51 percent, for $500 million.

Bank of Canada searches far and wide for Carney's successor

OTTAWA (Reuters) - The search for a new Bank of Canada chief to replace Mark Carney has pitted internal front-runner Tiff Macklem against a range of external candidates as officials look outside the bank for people who may have more hands-on business experience. Most central bank watchers believe Macklem, currently second-in-command at the bank, has outstanding credentials and deserves to take over when his boss leaves.

Global stocks, euro gain as Cyprus banks reopen

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Major stock markets recovered and the euro edged off a four-month low on Thursday, as banks in Cyprus reopened to relative calm following the island's controversial bailout. On Wall Street, stocks moved in and out of positive territory in choppy, pre-holiday trade. <.n/>

Virtual games help the blind navigate unknown territory

Mar. 27, 2013 ? On March 27thJoVE (Journal of Visualized Experiments) will publish a new video article by Dr. Lotfi Merabet showing how researchers in the Department of Ophthalmology at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary and Harvard Medical School have developed a virtual gaming environment to help blind individuals improve navigation skills and develop a cognitive spatial map of unfamiliar buildings and public locations.

"For the blind, finding your way or navigating in a place that is unfamiliar presents a real challenge," Dr. Merabet explains. "As people with sight, we can capture sensory information through our eyes about our surroundings. For the blind that is a real challenge? the blind will typically use auditory and tactile cues."

The technique utilizes computer generated layouts of public buildings and spatial sensory feedback to synthesize a virtual world that mimics a real world navigation task. In the game, participants must find jewels and carry them out of the building, without being intercepted by roaming monsters that steal the jewels and hide them elsewhere.

Participants interface with the virtual building by using a keyboard and wearing headphones that play auditory cues that help spatially orient them to the world around them. This interaction helps users generate an accurate mental layout of the mimicked building. Dr. Merabet and his colleagues are also exploring applications of this technology with other user interfaces, like a Wii Remote or joystick.

"We have developed software called ABES, the Audio Based Environment Simulator that represents the actual physical environment of the Carol Center for the Blind in Newton Massachusetts. The participants will use the game metaphor to get a sense of the whole building through open discovery, allowing people to learn room layouts more naturally than if they were just following directions."

The technology will invariably be useful for the 285 million blind people world-wide, 6 million of which live in the United States. It will also have applications beyond the blind community for individuals with other visual impairments, cognitive deficits, or those recovering from brain injuries.

Dr. Merabet considers publication in JoVE's video format especially helpful. "It is conceptually difficult for a sighted person to understand 'a video game for blind people.' What JoVE allows us to do is break down layouts of the game and strategy, show how the auditory cues can be used and how we quantify performance going from the virtual game to the physical world."

World Water Crisis Could Lead to Big Investing Opportunity ...

When you turn on the faucet of your kitchen sink or bathroom shower, it's easy to forget that behind the water is a really big business. From finding a clean source, to purifying it, and getting it into your home, there are plenty of ways to profit from good old H2O. And the demand for safe, clean water in every corner of the world has never been higher.

We were reminded of its importance last week with the United Nation's 20th annual World Water Day. Connecticut Water Services (CTWS) marked the occasion by ringing the closing bell at the Nasdaq marketsite. Their CEO, Eric Thornburg notes that World Water Day "commemorates the impact that water has on the lives of people all over the world. And of course in the U.S. we?re very proud of that impact, because people can take a drink of water and not have a second thought about its safety or freshness. But in other parts of the world you can?t do that. There are over a billion people around the globe that do not have access to safe drinking water."

But from that global crisis flows opportunity. Investors are catching on to the value of water and many believe it could be the next great commodity to invest in.

The S&P Global Water Index (CGW) outperformed the benchmark S&P 500 index last year rising 21% against the S&P's 16% gain. PowerShares Water Resources fund (PHO), the largest ETF in the sector, saw a 23% jump in 2012 as well, and Thornburg's Connecticut Water Services, despite facing some near-term price pressure, is up 20% in the last five years.

"I think the real investment opportunity is in the infrastructure and the systems that treat and protect this resource," Thornburg says. "Purifying the water and pumping it and storing it and having it available when it's needed, that's really our business."

One of the biggest challenges to the business is that aging water infrastructure. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, our country loses 1.7 trillion gallons of water annually due to leaks and water main breaks. That's enough to supply the ten largest cities in the U.S. for a year.

"Unfortunately there's a lot of backlog to catch up on because for many years people weren't replacing pipe on a systematic basis," Thornburg says."We replace one percent of our underground assets every year and then we apply a surcharge to customers bills to recover that capital."

Once Connecticut Water recovers that capital, shareholders reap the benefits in the form of a dividend yielding 3.3%. But money isn't the only perk of staying on top of repairs. Thornburg points out that his company's pipe replacement plan alone creates 160 high-paying, highly skilled jobs.

Still, new jobs means more spending for Thornburg and he isn't looking to Washington for help.

"We have chosen not to take advantage of federal funding," he says. "We?ve sought access to private capital because it is so much more efficient to attract it and deploy it and it doesn?t have nearly the load of regulatory requirements. I would really like to see our government leaders solve that because capital is really needed by the municipalities and towns who own their own water systems and that would help them to solve their problems."

Another one of those problems is demand. As the world population grows and water sources shrink, Thornburg's industry is increasingly concerned about keeping up. "Customers are going to have to be willing to pay a bit more," he admits, "and we?re going to have to be good stewards of this so that future generations don?t have to invest far more than they should."

"The 5.1 surround sound setup of the SW-G5.1 3500 gives gamers an advantage in first person shooter games by allowing them to pinpoint enemy locations by sound alone," the company said on Tuesday. "Gaming on regular stereo speakers only allows users to discern between right and left. The 5.1 sound enables gamers to listen to opponents' footsteps from all surrounding directions."

In addition to the remote control, users can adjust sound and bass from the control panel on the subwoofer itself. Control options also include a STANDBY and an AUX/5.1 CH switch function, which enables users to flip between gaming and music listening. On the front is a headphone and microphone jack, and on the back are three RCA jacks with 5.1 CH color coding and an additional AUX 3.5-mm input.

"Offering booming bass, crisp middle to high range sound, and the flexibility to connect to gaming, music, and other entertainment devices, the SW-G5.1 3500 surround sound speaker system epitomizes the high-quality that the GX Gaming Series represents in a louder more versatile design," the company said.

The Genius SW-G5.1 3500 system is now available in the US and Canada for the suggested retail price of $149.99. It's part of the company's GX Gaming series which can be seen here.

Violent video games are a risk factor for criminal behavior and aggression, new evidence shows

Mar. 26, 2013 ? People are quick to point the finger or dismiss the effect of violent video games as a factor in criminal behavior. New evidence from Iowa State researchers demonstrates a link between video games and youth violence and delinquency.

Matt DeLisi, a professor of sociology, said the research shows a strong connection even when controlling for a history of violence and psychopathic traits among juvenile offenders.

"When critics say, 'Well, it's probably not video games, it's probably how antisocial they are,' we can address that directly because we controlled for a lot of things that we know matter," DeLisi said. "Even if you account for the child's sex, age, race, the age they were first referred to juvenile court -- which is a very powerful effect -- and a bunch of other media effects, like screen time and exposure. Even with all of that, the video game measure still mattered."

The results were not unexpected, but somewhat surprising for Douglas Gentile, an associate professor of psychology, who has studied the effects of video game violence exposure and minor aggression, like hitting, teasing and name-calling.

"I didn't expect to see much of an effect when we got to serious delinquent and criminal level aggression because youth who commit that level of aggression have a lot of things going wrong for them. They often have a lot of risk factors and very few protective factors in their lives," Gentile said.

The study published in the April issue of Youth Violence and Juvenile Justice examined the level of video game exposure for 227 juvenile offenders in Pennsylvania. The average offender had committed nearly nine serious acts of violence, such as gang fighting, hitting a parent or attacking another person in the prior year.

The results show that both the frequency of play and affinity for violent games were strongly associated with delinquent and violent behavior. Craig Anderson, Distinguished Professor of psychology and director of the Center for the Study of Violence at Iowa State, said violent video game exposure is not the sole cause of violence, but this study shows it is a risk factor.

"Can we say from this study that Adam Lanza, or any of the others, went off and killed people because of media violence? You can't take the stand of the NRA that it's strictly video games and not guns," Anderson said. "You also can't take the stand of the entertainment industry that it has nothing to do with media violence that it's all about guns and not about media violence. They're both wrong and they're both right, both are causal risk factors."

Researchers point out that juvenile offenders have several risk factors that influence their behavior. The next step is to build on this research to determine what combination of factors is the most volatile and if there is a saturation point.

"When studying serious aggression, looking at multiple risk factors matters more than looking at any one," Gentile said. "The cutting edge of research is trying to understand in what combination do the individual risk factors start influencing each other in ways to either enhance or mitigate the odds of aggression?"

What does this mean for parents?

There is a lot of misinformation about video game exposure, Anderson said, that makes it difficult for parents to understand the harmful effects. Although it is one variable that parents can control, he understands that with mixed messages about the risks some parents may feel it's not worth the effort.

"What parent would go through the pain and all the effort it takes to really control their child's media diet, if they don't really think it makes any difference? That is why it is so important to get out the simple and clear message that media violence does matter," Anderson said.

Just because a child plays a violent video game does not mean he or she is going to act violently. Researchers say if there is a take away for parents, it is an awareness of what their children are playing and how that may influence their behavior.

"I think parents need to be truthful and honest about who their children are in terms of their psychiatric functioning," DeLisi said. "If you have a kid who is antisocial, who is a little bit vulnerable to influence, giving them something that allows them to escape into themselves for a long period of time isn't a healthy thing."

Andrus+Veerpalu+Men+15KM+Free+Event+FIS+Nordic+d65c8_K8S1VxGetty Images

The 2011 labor agreement included an important provision:? HGH testing is coming to the NFL.? Nearly 20 months later, HGH testing is no closer than it was before the agreement was signed.

The latest evidence comes from the case of Andrus Veerpalu, an Estonian skier whose three-year suspension was overturned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.? Naturally, the NFL and the NFLPA disagree as to the meaning of the ruling, and the incident has caused Albert Breer of NFL Network to learn that the two sides have scrapped an agreement to conduct a so-called ?population study? aimed at gauging the permissible natural levels of HGH in football players.

The details don?t matter, because neither the NFL nor Congress is willing to do anything more than huff and puff about the union?s refusal to honor the agreement to submit to HGH testing.? As a result, the perception is that neither the NFLPA nor the NFL truly want HGH testing.

Since the day the NFL banned the use of HGH, the prohibition has been enforced via the honor system.? The problem with the honor system? ? It works roughly as well as the rhythm method.? So with no way to test for HGH, players will get caught only if a vial of HGH falls out of their letterman jackets, or if the player?s name pops up in the records of an HGH supplier the government is prosecuting.

Surely, the NFL and the NFLPA realize that, if/when HGH testing begins, plenty of players will be caught.? Which will reduce the supply of healthy players.? In turn, players who quit using HGH will not recover as quickly from injuries, likewise reducing the supply of healthy players.

And it won?t be good for the game if players are busted for using HGH, even though most fans presume that they?re using something to get big, to stay big, and/or to rebound from big hits applied by other big men.

If the NFL truly wanted to force the issue on HGH testing, wouldn?t the league unleash the legal hounds and push the issue in court or via an arbitration?? The players already have agreed to submit to testing, and the NFL has more than enough ammunition to argue that the NFLPA deliberately is dragging its feet.? The idea that the NFL doesn?t want to force players to the needle by court order only goes so far.? At some point, the NFL needs to do more than complain about the NFLPA?s refusal to proceed, or the NFLPA will continue to refuse to proceed.

Likewise, Congress has proven to be impotent on the topic, periodically issuing hollow threats but never taking action.Through it all, the delay has given those who use HGH an opportunity to find better masking agents ? or to develop the next wave of substances that work like HGH but for which testing doesn?t yet exist.

The best news for the NFL, the NFLPA, and Congress is that neither the media nor the fans seem to care that the NFL and the NFLPA have struck a deal to abandon the honor system, but that the honor system has continued to be used for two seasons, and counting.

'Breaking Bad' script missing after car break-in

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) ? A man accused of breaking into "Breaking Bad" actor Bryan Cranston's car late last year and stealing a script for the popular television show set in New Mexico has been arrested, authorities said Monday.

Bernalillo County Sheriff's officials said Xavier Macafee, 29, was being held on suspicion of burglary.

Macafee, of Albuquerque, was booked into jail last Friday and made his initial court appearance Monday, according to authorities who didn't immediately know if he had a lawyer.

Deputy Aaron Williamson, a spokesman for the sheriff's department, said none of the stolen items have been recovered but detectives were investigating the case.

He said other items reported taken from Cranston's car were an iPad, a shoulder bag and "miscellaneous personal items."

Cranston's car was broken into Dec. 20 while it was parked at Sandia Peak, authorities said.

The award-winning AMC TV series is set in Albuquerque and is filming its fifth and final season in and around the city.

"Breaking Bad" follows Cranston's character Walter White producing and selling methamphetamine with a former student named Jesse Pinkman, who's played by Aaron Paul.

A call to AMC network officials in California for comment on the script theft wasn't immediately returned Monday afternoon.

Sonos Playbar review: an excellent (and expensive) home theater ...

Sonos Playbar review an excellent and expensive home theater addition

Sonos has found a sweet spot in the audio world. Its wireless technology and ability to stream music from almost any source -- be it from the cloud or local storage -- have given it considerable geek cred, yet its simple setup still offers mass appeal. Of course, none of that would matter if its systems didn't sound good, but fortunately, Sonos' Play:3, Play:5 and its Sub have all impressed with the quality of audio they produce. The $699 Playbar is the newest member of the family, and with this product, Sonos is setting its sights squarely on the home theater market. Is it fit for your living room? Read on to find out.

Hardware and setup

Sonos Playbar review an excellent and expensive home theater addition

The Playbar is a handsome, if understated piece of equipment. At 3.35 x 35.43 x 5.51 inches (85 x 900 x 140mm) in size, you'll have no problem fitting it beneath your flat-screen. Indeed, we used it with both a 42- and 47-inch TV, and found the dimensions appropriate in either case. Its exterior is sheathed in black speaker cloth, and has a pewter-colored insert comprising a lengthwise edge on either side of the bar. A pair of matching inset bands rings the mesh grilles on each end -- an echo of the design language of the Sub -- with the Sonos-standard volume toggle, mute button and an LED power light on the right side. The long metal edges are made of extruded aluminum, and the wider of the two makes room for both an inlaid IR receiver and IR repeater strip, along with a notch cut out on the underside for the power, two Ethernet jacks and Toslink port. Build quality is excellent -- the openings are pretty uniform and we couldn't find any visual blemishes on our review unit either.

Aside from providing a nice bit of visual contrast and a place for some minimal Sonos branding, the larger aluminum edge serves as a heat sink for the nine drivers that pump out sound. There are six 8-centimeter (3.15-inch) aluminum cone mids powered by neodymium magnets, and three 2.5-centimeter (1-inch) titanium dome tweeters, and each speaker has its own digital amp. The speakers are mounted in a super rigid, sealed plastic enclosure at a 45-degree angle, and it's that angular sweet spot that's key to providing good acoustic imaging whether the Playbar is mounted on the wall or lying flat on a TV cabinet. Of course, the accelerometer and 800Mhz PowerPC CPU inside also work in tandem to determine the Playbar's orientation and tweak the EQ accordingly to ensure that imaging is perfect.

Sonos Playbar review an excellent and expensive home theater addition

It's not exactly groundbreaking industrial design, but it does have a bit more panache than your average soundbar. Put it this way: it'll fit in with just about any d?cor, but it's distinctive enough that astute visitors will likely notice and ask about it -- or at least that was our experience while testing it out.

Such simplicity of operation is often difficult to execute, but the boffins at Sonos have made pairing an IR remote about as easy as it can be.

Sonos prides itself on the fact that its systems are simple to install, and the Playbar is no exception. To test that ease of installation, I asked my not-so-tech-savvy girlfriend to hook up the Playbar and a Sonos Bridge, and she had it wired up in less than five minutes. Just plug in the power cord and the Toslink cable to the Playbar, then connect the other end of the optical cable to your TV or other audio source and you're good to go.

After that, the Playbar prompts you to hit the volume-up button on your TV remote, which allows it to find the proper IR code. From then on, your remote should be able to control the volume on the Playbar. Also, in the event the Playbar doesn't recognize your remote straight away, the Sonos software will walk you through hitting the volume toggle and the mute buttons so that it can learn the correct code and add it to the list on Sonos' servers. That way, future customers won't have to go through those additional steps. That's just one other bit of engineering genius from the Sonos folks. Such simplicity of operation is often difficult to execute, but the boffins at Sonos have made pairing an IR remote about as easy as it can be.

We did hit a slight snag in trying to pair the Playbar and Bridge, despite the Sonos Controller software's clear and easy-to-follow instructions. However, moving the Bridge a bit farther from our router and a quick reset of said router remedied the issue. Then it was simply a matter of hitting the join button on the Bridge and the mute and volume up button on the Playbar, and we were up and running in short order. Once connected, it took about 10 minutes to index the 40GB of music we had on our external hard drive connected via USB, during which time we entered the login info for our streaming services. All told, we went from unboxing to blasting Blind Melon in less than half an hour.

A quick note about our setup. We were forced to connect the Playbar directly to a set-top box because our particular flat-screen's optical-out doesn't switch on when set to an HDMI input. Without the ability to pull audio from whatever was playing on our TV, we had to swap connections between our PS3 and our satellite TV box if we wanted the Sonos' simulated surround sound on either. An inconvenience, to be sure, and something that runs counter to Sonos' simplicity of use ethos. Of course, this shouldn't pose a problem for users who own TV sets without such a limitation, but it's certainly something to consider before spending $700 on a Playbar.

Software

Sonos Playbar review an excellent and expensive home theater addition

We've covered both the Sonos desktop and mobile Controller apps in our previous Sonos reviews, and the user experience remains unchanged since their overhaul a year ago. There are three panes of controls for bigger screens: the leftmost shows all your connected Sonos speakers, the middle displays a queue of tracks and what's currently playing on a selected speaker and the right window displays your available audio sources. At the top are the volume, EQ, play / pause and track controls, and a universal search-as-you-type field. There are also buttons for clearing your current queue or saving it as a playlist, plus sleep timer and alarm settings at the bottom.

All of these features are available on the mobile apps, but are situated within menus, as opposed to being readily available. For example, if you want to tweak the bass and treble settings from the "now playing" screen on the mobile app, you have to tap through no less than five menus to get to the necessary controls. That's hardly an ideal UI; in fact, it quickly became a source of irritation for us. Every. Single. Time.

Despite the somewhat arcane nature of the Controller app, most folks won't have trouble getting comfy with it in a day or two.

Suffice to say that the multi-pane interface of the desktop and tablet Controller apps is a better UI than the mobile version, as it makes more controls readily available and you can easily drag and drop songs into your queue. And, diving through the hierarchy of menus to get at all your sound sources feels more tolerable when you can do so while still being able to control your queue and what's playing. Despite the somewhat arcane nature of the Controller app, most folks won't have trouble getting comfy with it in a day or two.

It feels like Sonos already supports every music service under the sun, but new streaming platforms seem to emerge on a weekly basis these days. That's why Sonos has its Sonos Labs feature, which allows you to test out new services as they become available. It's a little-talked-about feature that Sonos provides, and while there isn't always something new to try out, it is always a pleasant surprise to find a new music provider to explore.

Sound

Sonos Playbar review an excellent and expensive home theater addition

We've said it before, but it bears repeating: the Playbar sounds good when compared to its soundbar competition, particularly when playing music. It's a versatile speaker that coped well with any genre we threw at it, whether it was bass-heavy tracks from Jay Z's The Black Album, ripping guitar solos from Phish: A Live One or vocal anthems from Fun.'s Some Nights. Bass is tight, and vocals are delivered with clarity. Similarly, the Playbar shines during TV and movie audio playback, providing good simulated surround. All in all, it's a considerable improvement over any TV speakers we've ever heard.

Is it a replacement for your home stereo? No. Casual listeners will find no fault with the Playbar's sonic output, but if you're thinking this new Sonos can provide the depth of sound and stereo separation provided by a quality set of desktop speakers or a full component stereo, you'll be disappointed. The Playbar excels as a soundbar, providing a considerable upgrade over your TV's speakers and serving as a capable stereo substitute that provides a convenient way to listen to all of your music.

The Playbar's home theater performance is bolstered by a pair of unique features: Night Sound and Speech Enhancement. Night Sound is aimed at those who prefer late-night TV viewing, but don't want to wake the neighbors. Switch it on, and the dynamic range of the audio coming through the speakers is reduced as the volume is lowered. Soft sounds, like dialogue, become louder, while the louder sounds, like explosions, are softened. It works fine for movie watching, but we found the feature made talk shows sound a bit tinny. All told, we preferred the audio with Night Sound turned off.

Speech Enhancement, on the other hand, was a welcome addition to our TV watching. It works through a combination of lowering bass, adding gain to the center channel while lowering the gains of competing channels and boosting or reducing certain frequency ranges. In practice, the feature is brilliant, as it makes voices sound richer and clearer, particularly when watching the talking heads on the news or ESPN. It's not something you notice until it's switched off, when you realize that onscreen voices suddenly seem muted and muddy in comparison.

Overall, the array of nine drivers inside delivered a well-rounded, room-filling sonic experience.

Overall, the array of nine drivers filled the room with sound, and despite Sonos' reluctance to talk about its products' wattages, the Playbar can really crank up the volume. We're talking wake-the-neighbors loud, and should you be so inclined, we detected no distortion during our (brief) time spent listening at max output. Needless to say, if you're looking for the Playbar to serve as the centerpiece for your next party you won't be disappointed.

Despite the Playbar's well-rounded abilities, we'd be remiss not to mention just how much better the listening experience is when it's paired with a Sonos Sub. For all the Playbar does well, it lacks the low-end punch of a subwoofer, and we sometimes missed that capability, particularly when watching movies. Those six 8-centimeter drivers simply cannot deliver the low, rumbling bass that is integral to a truly great theatrical experience. That's not to say the Playbar doesn't deliver good home theater audio on its own; it's just that having heard the soundbar in concert with the Sub, without one, it's a noticeably diminished experience. Naturally, home theater sound can be improved further by deploying a couple of Play:3s as satellite speakers to create a true 5.1 surround system, but adding the Sub is what really fills in the Playbar's sonic gaps.

Wrap-up

Sonos Playbar review an excellent and expensive home theater addition

Sonos' Playbar is an expertly constructed, excellent-sounding soundbar, but at $700 it poses a significant challenge; it's hardly an impulse buy. Pair it with a Sub for a truly great home theater audio experience, and that tally rises to $1,300 or $1,400 (not counting another $50 for a Sonos Bridge). An extravagant sum when compared to, say, Vizio's forthcoming highly regarded soundbar and wireless sub system.

Vizio's offering will stream music via Bluetooth, comes with a pair of satellite speakers and delivers near-Sonos quality sound for a mere $329. However, you don't get the all-in-one music streaming solution of the Sonos Controller, the Playbar's robust and well-engineered hardware, nor the elegant simplicity of setup that only Sonos provides. So, while the Playbar may not necessarily represent the best bang for your buck when it comes to home theater systems, it does offer a superior user experience -- and if you have the financial means, you won't be disappointed by its performance. Put it this way: this is one review unit we wish we didn't have to send back.

Pakistan's Musharraf vows return despite risks

(AP) ? Former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf says he will follow through with his plans to return to his homeland despite risks of arrest and other threats.

Musharraf, who has been living in self-exile in London and Dubai, faces possible arrest in Pakistan in connection with the killing of an ex-prime minister.

But Musharraf told journalists Saturday in Dubai that he will return to take part in May elections despite the "fear of the unknown," including possible death threats.

He plans to travel Sunday to Karachi. Journalists and supporters of Musharraf's All Pakistan Muslim League are expected to accompany him.

Musharraf took power in a 1999 coup. He faces charges of conspiring to assassinate ex-premier Benazir Bhutto, who was killed in 2007.

Musharraf has called the charges baseless.
