Fla. governor wants $1.2 billion more for schools

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- Florida Gov. Rick Scott will ask for a $1.2 billion boost in spending on public schools in the coming year, a move that could set up a clash with the Republican-controlled Legislature but could boost his bid for re-election.

Scott revealed the figure when he outlined his top spending priorities during The Associated Press' 19th annual planning meeting on Wednesday.

His announcement comes a day before the Republican governor is expected to make his 2013 budget recommendations to state legislators. Scott will give additional details on his budget proposal, although it is unlikely that Scott will provide a definitive answer on whether he supports accepting federal aid to expand Medicaid.

The total amount of money that Scott plans to seek for public schools includes his previously announced pitch to give every teacher in the state a $2,500 pay raise.

Scott ? who just two years ago had recommended a cut in education ? said that his proposal would boost per-student spending by roughly 6.5 percent.

"Investing in our teachers and in our education system is the key to our state's continued economic growth," Scott said. "We made the hard choices to recover and get back on track ? now we must make the smart choices to invest in Florida's future."

Some Democrats called Scott's recommendation an "epiphany" that may be more about his 2014 re-election bid. Scott has battled low poll numbers for most of his time in office.

"He's finally admitting that I was wrong to try to starve education," said Sen. Chris Smith, D-Fort Lauderdale.

A breakdown of Scott's schools proposal shows that some of the $1.2 billion won't necessarily make an impact in the classroom. His recommendations include a nearly $300 million payment into the state pension plan on behalf of teachers. Scott's recommendation also includes a $100 million "technology initiative" as well as the money needed to cover increased school enrollment.

It's unclear, however, whether Scott's fellow Republicans will approve a budget that includes his spending priorities. Legislative leaders have already said they are uneasy with an across-the-board pay raise for teacher salaries. But they also said that while the economy is improving the state does not have an unlimited budget surplus.

"We do have more revenue, our budget surplus is breathing room," House Speaker Will Weatherford said. "It's not enough to put your feet up on the couch."

Scott is expected to announce on Thursday spending reductions in some areas of state spending, including nearly $100 million in savings realized from changes in state contracts, the elimination of nearly 932 positions by closing offices, shedding vacant state jobs and reorganizing parts of state government.

But the governor refused to say much on what may be the biggest budget question of the 2013 session: Will the state of Florida accept billions in federal aid to expand Medicaid coverage?

Under President Barack Obama's health care law, Washington would pay 100 percent of the costs of expanding Medicaid from 2014 to 2016. Between 2017 and 2020, the federal share would decrease to 90 percent and the states' contribution would rise in stages to 10 percent, and that's where it would stay.

The law calls for states in 2014 to expand eligibility of Medicaid to those making up to 133 percent of the poverty level, or $29,326 for a family of four in Florida. The changes would also require adding people who are below the poverty level but not eligible for Medicaid, such as childless adults.

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled last summer that expansion of Medicaid is not mandatory and that states can opt out if they choose.

Scott said that there are still questions that need to be answered by federal authorities before he can render a verdict on Medicaid expansion ? hinting that he is unlikely to address it in the budget recommendations he will roll out.

The two Republican leaders of the Legislature said they are still undecided about the expansion.

But Weatherford told reporters and editors, however, that state lawmakers are ready to render a final verdict on expansion with or without the governor's input by sometime in March.

"We certainly care what the governor thinks," Weatherford said. "It would have an impact. But we're not waiting on him to tell us what to do in this regard."

Single and dating online? Don't give up on the real world so fast

For single people in an era where potential mates spend more time in virtual cafes than real ones, dating online seems?unavoidable. But these couples found each other the traditional way. Dating online is not your only option, single people.

By Staff,?Associated Press / January 30, 2013

Nicole Buergers, right, and Brenden Macaluso snuggle at the eatery in Houston where they met nearly a year ago, Jan. 19. In this age of dating online, virtual flirting, and location-based hookup by app, these two are firm believers in three-dimensional serendipity.

Nicole Buergers and Brenden Macaluso struck up a conversation about hipster eyewear over cheap eats at a Houston hangout one Sunday afternoon and Macaluso recalls the evening ending this way:

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

Nicole: "So how do we do this?"

Brenden: "You give me your number, I call you and we go out and have fun."

Yep, random love is alive and well in Houston. In this age of online dating, virtual flirting,?and location-based hookup by app, these two are firm believers in three-dimensional serendipity nearly a year after their first encounter.

Even better, Macaluso realized before pursuing Buergers further that the two attended the same large suburban high school and had been in a couple of English classes together.

"Like many young people in the 21st century I had taken a stab at Internet dating," said Macaluso, an industrial designer who also restores vintage motorcycles. "For me this was a complete failure. My experiences had always resulted in awkward dates."

That, he said, left a simple formula for finding love: meeting in person, and "when you least expect it, not when you're trying to."

Mechanized dating remains a huge business worth a billion or more worldwide, but several others like Macaluso in living-online generations said they, too, found their happiness the old-fashioned way. In other facets of life they remain avid users of digital tools and social networks, which is where the AP caught up with them, including Patrick Murphy in Medway, Mass., southwest of Boston.

Murphy, the general manager of a junk removal business, found a girlfriend online and the two eventually moved in together. The relationship soured about three years later and he returned from a weekend away to find she had disappeared all his stuff.

With little money, no furniture and a whopping case of the blues, Murphy's co-workers alerted him to a tags-on leather couch somebody didn't want. After he picked it up, word came through the office that a local teen club was in search of a sofa, so he decided to donate it instead.

Enter Caroline Cooke, the club worker who took possession of said couch. "I wasn't looking for love," said Murphy of their unlikely meeting in late 2008. "I was just looking to make it through each day. We've been together ever since."

Has virtual life and the promise of dating algorithms left some singles closed off to such on-the-ground happenstance? "The way we met, we tell everyone and they think it's crazy," Murphy offers.

Never married, an internet marketer, and without a boyfriend for years, Buergers considered herself a prime candidate for online dating before she bumped into Macaluso.

"I just felt really uneasy about the online dating thing," she said. "It's not that it has a stigma for me or anything, but just personally, I couldn't put myself out there like that."

Others lent assurances that shopping carts still collide, friends of friends still meet at weddings and passengers on planes still strike up conversations that land them happiness.

For Barbara Ward it was the law. She married her real estate attorney in Portland, Maine, after consulting him in 2004 about a tricky condo development at a historic inn she had purchased.

"Neither Ron or I had been looking for love, or even a date," she said. "We never did finish those documents."

As a dating concierge, Thomas Edwards dreams of love 24/7, but he never thought he'd find it for himself with a fellow expert in the industry, especially one who works primarily online while he works mostly offline.

Edwards is The Professional Wingman, a real-life "Hitch" who charges up to $20,000 for dating makeovers. He offers everything from confidence-boosting trips to bars for instruction on how to talk to women to lifestyle overhauls, wardrobe and all.

"But I'd never done online dating," he said.

Laurie Davis is an online dating hound, with a new book out from Simon & Schuster, "Love (at) First Click: The Ultimate Guide to Online Dating." She put up her first profile at 19 and helps people with, among other things, taking just the right photo and hitting just the right tone in their dating bios.

The two fell for each other after she spotted his Twitter avatar during a cruise of the hashtag "dating" and struck up a conversation in 140 characters.

Turns out they grew up 20 minutes apart in the Boston area. The two plan to marry next year.

"Everything really just escalated," Davis said. "Needless to say I never needed to help him with his profile."

Worldwide, many strains of the bacterium Staphyloccocus aureus, commonly known as staph infections, are already resistant to all antibiotics except vancomycin. But as bacteria are becoming resistant to this once powerful antidote, S. aureus has moved one step closer to becoming an unstoppable killer. Now, researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill have not only identified the mechanism by which vancomycin resistance spreads from one bacterium to the next, but also have suggested ways to potentially stop the transfer.

The work, led by Matthew Redinbo, professor of chemistry at UNC's College of Arts and Sciences, addresses the looming threat of incurable staph infections a global public health problem that has mobilized scientists across disciplines to work together to identify the Achilles heel of these antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

"We used to live in a world where antibiotics could readily cure bacterial disease," said Redinbo. "But this is clearly no longer the case. We need to understand how bacteria obtain resistance to drugs like vancomycin, which served for decades as the 'antibiotic of last resort.'"

In his work, Redinbo and his team targeted a bacterial enzyme known as Nicking Enzyme in Staphyloccoccus, or NES. The enzyme has long been known to interact with plasmids, circular pieces of double-stranded DNA within bacteria that are physically separate from the bacterial chromosome. Plasmids commonly contain antibiotic-resistance genes, and can make the machinery necessary to transfer these genes from an infected bacterium to an uninfected one.

By revealing the crystal structure of NES, the researchers found that this enzyme nicks one strand of the plasmid at a very specific siteand in a very specific way. It turns out that NES forms two loops that work together to pinch one strand of the plasmid at a particular groove in the DNA to cut it. This strand is now free to leave its host and transfer to a nearby bacterium, making them resistant to vancomycin.

Moreover, Redinbo was able to capture a snapshot of the enzyme bound to the plasmid. "As a structural biologist, it's all about the pictures for me," said Redinbo. "And it was this picture that confirmed the precise location on which NES works."

With this information, Redinbo knew the groove on the DNA that the enzyme recognize and could design a small synthetic molecule that would sit on this groove and block NES. Teaming up with colleagues at the California Institute of Technology, Redinbo did just that. The molecule prevented NES from nicking the DNA, which could prevent the resistance genes from spreading.

According to Redinbo and colleagues, this small synthetic molecule could help guide future research aimed at developing effective therapies for strains of antibiotic-resistant S. aureus.

"This is really exciting for us," said Redinbo, who is also a professor at UNC's School of Medicine and a member of the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. "It opens the door for potentially stopping the spread of antibiotic resistanceand that's exactly what we need in this post-antibiotic era."

The work was published this week in the online early edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Super Bowl 2013: NFL Experience kicks off with a Who Dat flair

The Super Bowl 2013 NFL Experience kicked off today (Jan. 30) with the delivery of the iconic Vince Lombardi Trophy to the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, where it was installed at the interactive fan festival with all the expected pomp and circumstance. Accompanying it, though, were no small amount of Who Dats and where y?ats.

Former Saints runningback and enduring fan favorite Deuce McAllister got the party started, donning white cotton gloves to carry the trophy down a red carpet to its perch in the middle of the event floor, where it will reside until being awarded to the winner of the big game on Sunday. (And where fans can take pictures of themselves with it.) Leading the way for McAllister were members of the Louisiana State Police. Behind were Saints mascot Sir Saint, the Saintsations cheerleaders and the St. Augustine High School Marching 100 marching band.

And all around, watching the procession and snapping away with cell-phone cameras, was a heavily black-and-gold crowd. That?s because today was Saints fan appreciation day at the NFL Experience, whereby anybody wearing a Saints jersey got a $5 discount off the price of admission. Local fans took advantage of the opportunity.

Diehard Saints fan Jeff Hall of Meridian, Miss., was one of the members of the Who Dat Nation in that number, making a beeline to the event?s autograph stage. Accompanied by son Dustin Hall and family friend Chris Elder, he brought along a Saints helmet -- already peppered with autographs -- as well what one NFL Experience volunteer declared to be the oddest item of the day to be autographed: a three-foot oval wooden plaque with a fleur-de-lis in the middle.

Hall's plaque was already covered with the autographs of 20 Saints players, including that of Saints quarterback Drew Brees, for which Hall reserved the plaque?s central fleur-de-lis. (?We got it after the last game of the season,? Hall said. ?We had to fight the crowd to get it, too.?)

Today?s additions: McAllister?s and current Saints runningback Mark Ingram?s signatures, bringing the number of autographs to 22.

?I?d like to get (Marques) Colston and Pierre Thomas, and then I think we?ll be done,? Hall said after collecting McAllister and Ingram?s autographs on the plaque, which he got two years ago and which hangs in a place of honor over his television.

Another popular stopover for black-and-gold jersey wearers: the Hall of Fame exhibit, which includes the bust of? Hall-of-Famer and former Saints standout Willie Roaf.

The hometown bias of the crowd can be expected to change this weekend when fans of this year?s Super Bowl teams, the San Francisco 49ers and Baltimore Ravens, arrive in town for the big game. The size of the crowd -- which today resembled sort of the NFL Experience?s version of a Jazzfest Thursday -- will, too.

But with the event covering more than 850,000 square feet and including everything from games to museum-quality exhibits to a working NFL Network set, there?s plenty of room for fans of all colors.

Tickets to the NFL Experience driven by GMC -- to be held at the Convention Center daily through Sunday (Feb. 3) -- can be purchased over the phone by calling (866) TIX-4NFL (849-4635), online at www.SuperBowl.com or at the stadium box office at Gate A. Fans can also purchase tickets at the Convention Center box office one hour before opening.

Non-discounted, single-day general-admission tickets are $25 for adults and $20 for children 12 and under. Several discount packages are also available. A limited number of NFLXtra wristbands will also be available on-site for an additional $47 and will allow holders to bypass lines for some of the event?s more popular attractions, including the autograph stage.

See below for a full schedule of hours of operation for the 2013 NFL Experience (subject to change):

  • Today, Jan. 30: 3 p.m. - 10 p.m.
  • Thursday, Jan. 31: 10 a.m. - 10 p.m.
  • Friday, Feb. 1: 10 a.m. - 10 p.m.
  • Saturday, Feb. 2: 10 a.m. - 10 p.m.
  • Sunday, Feb. 3: 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Academy gets collection of B-movie posters from golden era

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has received a gift of 1,088 original film posters, many of them "B movies" from Hollywood's golden age, the organization announced Tuesday.

The donated posters, from Chicago real estate developer Dwight Cleveland, document the studio era of "B movies" in the first half of the 20th century and are mainly from Twentieth Century-Fox. The posters from the "B movies" - so named because they played in theaters on the bottom of double feature bills - represent a wide variety of genres, including westerns, war films, musicals, biblical tales, and social issue films.

The gift, which will be housed in the Academy's Margaret Herrick Library, fills a gap in the Academy's collection, an official said.

"B-movies tap into the public consciousness and provide rich fodder for better understanding the times," said Linda Mehr, director of the Margaret Herrick Library.

Cleveland began collecting in 1977 while still in high school, inspired after seeing film posters in an art teacher's classroom. After moving to Los Angeles, Cleveland scoured the once-plentiful collector's shops on Hollywood Boulevard for high-quality memorabilia and continues to collect today.

"I really think that film posters are one of the very few truly indigenous art forms of our country," Cleveland said. "By making these gifts, I hope to excite an appreciation for the works themselves among members of the general public and also set a good example for other collectors."

Anne Coco, the Herrick's graphic arts librarian, expressed the Academy's appreciation.

"Dwight's collection was a dream to receive," she said. "Not only was it very well organized, but the posters also were in excellent shape. Our staff is fairly certain he was a librarian in another lifetime,"

Posters in the library's collections are stored in climate-controlled vaults in Beverly Hills and may be accessed by filmmakers, historians, journalists, students and the general public. They are frequently shown at the Academy's own exhibitions and loaned to cultural institutions worldwide.

?

Social media optimization is very different than SEO. Rather than implementing strategies that are tailored towards search engine algorithms, developers must focus on engaging with human visitors.

That beings said, an effective social media optimization campaign can help you improve your search engine rankings as well. After all, search engine rankings sole concern is promoting the satisfaction of their users. Google is more likely to rank a site higher if it sees that your visitors already enjoy the content that you are providing. You boost your search engine rankings considerably if you develop an effective social media optimization strategy that makes it easier for your visitors to access, engage with and share your content.

?

Here are a few simple strategies any website or blog owner can handle them on his/her own.

?

?

Social media marketing should be part of your basic SEO. Image source

?

?

?

These techniques can work whether you are doing your SEO in-house or have hired a company or a Virtual Assistant to help you out, including the following strategies in your SEO campaign can help you give a huge boost to your SERPs (Search Engine Results Page):

?

?

Use Twitter?s Hashtags

?

?

Trending topics in Twitter are preceded by hashtags.

?

Don?t underestimate the power of the hashtag. ?People use the hashtag to search for tweets about a particular topic. For example, if someone is looking for tweets about seo tips, they will use type it in twitter search as #SEOtips.? As a business you can take use hashtag to improve the chances of your tweets being seen by people searching for information in that niche.

?

The following are some top tips to get the most tractions from your hashtags:

?

1)???? Identify trending hashtags that you can connect with your business in a manner that appears natural. For example, if you are app developer, and the trending hashtag is #AustralianOpen you may tweet about apps that can help you keep track of the games being played, and use the AustralianOpen hashtag in your tweet.

?

A word advice here, never use a hashtag, unless you know what it?s about. The popular fashion brand Kenneth and Cole learnt this lesson the hard way.

?

2)???? Create your own hashtag and use it in all your tweets. Remember hashtags are always used without any space between the words. This way your tweet will be displayed whenever someone searches for the hashtag you used. A good tip here is to create hashtags using the your targeted keyword as well as your business name. The latter will help improve your brand?s visibility on Twitter, as your business name will feature in all re-tweets.

?

3)???? Don?t use more than two hashtags in a tweet, or it will make it hard too read and people may skip it all together.

?

4)???? Participate in hashtags associated with live discussions; these usually happen around sporting events, news, etc. This is a great way to build new connections on Twitter.

5)???? There are several twitter chats across niche areas scheduled at fixed times during the week. You can use hashtags to participate in these chats. Here?s a spreadsheet that has over 500 such chats listed.

?

?

Update Your Business Blog Regularly

?

Blogs are considered as part of social media because readers and visitors can really interact with one another through the comments section. In fact, numerous blogs have formed large online communities already, and these people stay in contact even beyond the ?premises? of the blog.

?

Your blog will be one of the most important aspects of your SEO strategy, especially if your business website is not the type that needs to be constantly updated with new content. After all, how many versions can you make for your company?s vision and mission without butchering the original essence of the text? A blog will take care of the need to produce fresh, high-quality content regularly.

A good tip to draw more traffic to your blog is to write about subjects that are either in news or are being highly debated, needless to say they should be related to your industry. You can get great ideas for your posts by setting up Google Alerts for industry specific keywords. This will help you stay on top of all industry developments and will also get to keep tack of opinions of thought leaders in your niche.

Install Social Sharing Widgets in Your Blog/Website

In relation to creating a blog, be sure to install social sharing widgets into your blog roll. Each post or article in your blog or website should be accompanied with these widgets. This makes it easier for loyal readers to share your posts (which are additional promotion for your website, blog or business) in their social media circles.

To encourage people to share, make sure you include a Call To Action, in your blog post. Even a simple statement like, ?Found this post useful, share it with your friends? can help.

The more shares you get, the better you social signals will be and that is going to give excellent SEO benefits, in terms of improved SERPs.

?

Use Bit.ly and Share Shortened Links To Your Site With A Call To Action

?

You want social media to help draw traffic to your site, right? Mentions of your website will help improve your site?s visibility in search results. Therefore try and include your website?s URL in some of your posts with an attention grabbing or engaging call to action.

For instance, you can create teasers of your latest post and paste the URL in your post. Or, let?s say if you are giving away a Free E-book on cake recipes with your newsletter subscription, you could create a tweet like ?Make sinfully delicious cakes with my FREE E-book. Download Now!?

Bit.ly can be a great tool to help you with this. It?s a tool that shortens URLs and tracks the number of clicks you receive. A shortened URL is also easier to fit into your tweet and looks neater when used in Facebook posts.

Be Human

The fact that you?re already in social media territory justifies the need for human interaction. Avoid automated posts. Reply to questions and comments, especially those that are complimentary in nature. This way, you endear yourself to the public, foster their trust, convince them to patronize your business, and earn their loyalty in the long run. These are the accomplishments that will ultimately matter the most.

This goes far beyond the benefits of SEO. It also serves to help you improve your brand value. A good tip is to divide your social media marketing time into ?one-on-one engagement? and ?posting content and forging new connections.?

Lucasfilm said in a statement Monday that it's postponing the scheduled 3-D releases of "Star Wars: Episode II ? Attack Of The Clones" and "Episode III ? Revenge of the Sith" this fall to instead focus its efforts on "Star Wars: Episode VII."

The Walt Disney Co. confirmed Friday that J.J. Abrams, creator of the TV series "Lost" and director of 2009's "Star Trek" movie, will direct the seventh installment of the franchise, set for a 2014 release.

Disney bought "Star Wars" maker Lucasfilm last month for $4.06 billion.

"Episode I ? The Phantom Menace" was released in 3-D last February and earned $22.4 million domestically its opening weekend.

The original prequels were released from 1999 to 2005.

Obama: Gun-control advocates have to listen more

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama says gun-control advocates should be better listeners in the debate over firearms in America.

In an interview with The New Republic, Obama says he has "a profound respect" for the tradition of hunting that dates back for generations.

"And I think those who dismiss that out of hand make a big mistake. Part of being able to move this forward is understanding the reality of guns in urban areas are very different from the realities of guns in rural areas," he says.

Obama has called for a ban on military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines and is pushing other policies following the mass shooting last month at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn. In response, gun-rights advocates have accused Obama and others of ignoring the Second Amendment rights of Americans.

The president says it's understandable that people are protective of their family traditions when it comes to hunting.

"So it's trying to bridge those gaps that I think is going to be part of the biggest task over the next several months. And that means that advocates of gun control have to do a little more listening than they do sometimes," he says.

Has Obama himself ever fired a gun?

"Yes," the president says, "in fact, up at Camp David, we do skeet shooting all the time."

His daughters don't shoot skeet at the presidential retreat in Maryland, he adds, "but oftentimes guests of mine go up there."

The interview appears in the Feb. 11 issue of The New Republic.

Laura Prudom: 'Nikita' Recap: New Challenges For Michael In 'Intersection' And 'Aftermath'

nikita aftermath recap

Note: Do not read on if you have not seen Season 3, Episodes 7 and 8 of The CW's "Nikita," titled "Intersection" and "Aftermath."

Just when you thought "Nikita" couldn't raise the stakes any higher, the show went and pulled a Luke Skywalker on poor Michael.

Admittedly, I was spoiled for that shocking ending (a hazard of the job), but even knowing that it was coming, a large part of me truly couldn't believe that the show would go so far with such a painfully permanent disfigurement -- proof that the series is as bold and unpredictable as ever.

Since life got in the way of last week's recap, I'll cover both "Intersection" and "Aftermath" here, which seems fitting, as the two episodes seem very much like two halves of a whole.

Last week, the looming threat of Amanda not only drove Birkhoff and Sonya to the edge -- risking Sonya's life in an attempt to deactivate her kill chip -- it also saw Alex admitting her relapse to Nikita and the rest of the team, revealed the identity of the second mole, and, oh yeah, pulled off the aforementioned hand amputation. I don't think I caught my breath the entire hour.

Although Michael's impending loss was foreshadowed nicely throughout the episode (Nikita didn't quite say "I have a bad feeling about this," but I'll take any excuse for another "Star Wars" parallel), "Intersection" featured plenty of humor early on to counterbalance the dark turn the story would take. Michael and Alex's supremely awkward fake date was a particular highlight, while Birkhoff once again scored many of the hour's best lines. ("I'm on the leader" -- another "SW" shout-out!)

It seemed as though we were being set up to lose Sonya in "Intersection" (and Birkhoff's cold-open dream sequence almost had me fooled for a hot second), but I was glad we got rid of Amanda's henchwoman Anne instead. While "Nikita" often manages to create three-dimensional and compelling guest roles, Anne has always felt one-note to me, and after she attempted to kill Nikita despite Amanda's orders -- not to mention trapping Michael's hand -- she had to go. (The car flipping stunt was truly incredible, too -- yet another impressively cinematic moment for the show from the incredible stunt team and director Dwight Little.)

In stark contrast to Anne, the Watchman was another fascinating rogue agent; the idea of a spy who can literally disappear, changing his appearance in an eyeblink, was a genius and perfectly executed concept. You'd have thought Division would've invested more time into training others like him, though.

But of course, the main event of the episode -- perhaps even of the series so far -- was the loss of Michael's hand, especially since Nikita was forced to cut it off herself or risk losing her fiance altogether. As Owen pointed out in "Aftermath," it's hard to imagine that anyone else would have the strength to do such a thing to their partner, especially with only seconds to act before the car's gas tank blew.

I think it's fair to say that the show hasn't always known what to do with Michael from a plot standpoint; aside from the gripping Kasim storyline in Season 1 which truly defined the character, and the controversial Cassandra arc in Season 2, he's often existed as Nikita's strong and supportive right hand man (oh, cruel irony), giving the less temperate Nikita and Alex opportunities to go off the rails on various occasions and leaving him to pick up the pieces. While I was surprised (and impressed) that the show took Michael's story to such an extreme, it felt like the right choice, giving Shane West some incredible material to sink his teeth into, and creating another organic conflict with Nikita so that their relationship didn't become stale.

As much as we, as viewers, might be rooting for Michael and Nikita to live happily ever after with no hardship or pain, such bliss doesn't exactly make for interesting TV. A show that is unable to evolve and keeps its characters static is one that is creatively stale, and that's not an issue that the "Nikita" writers have. We all know that Maggie Q and Shane West can excel with such dramatic, gut-wrenching material, and it's good to see Michael being allowed to let loose and fall apart for a change, enabling Nikita to (hopefully) keep him steady by being the anchor for once.

Matters may be complicated by Owen, as we started to see in "Aftermath." I think that all of these characters are -- despite their histories -- honorable, decent people, and that no matter how far Michael pushes Nikita away in his grief, she won't turn to Owen for physical comfort, and Owen won't take advantage of her vulnerability. As Shane West pointed out in our recent interview, it makes sense why Owen would be attracted to Nikita (who wouldn't be?), and even why Nikita would have a bond with Owen, given what Division made them both do, but with Michael reeling from such a profound loss, I'd have a hard time forgiving Nikita for cheating on him (no matter how much of a douchebag he was this week -- albeit for justifiable reasons).

The hardest and most fascinating part of the whole incident is that both Michael and Nikita are right; Nikita can't tell Michael how to deal with the loss, and Michael can't blame her for saving his life. It's an obstacle that they truly do need to face together, but with the wound so fresh (literally), it's understandable that both are failing to do so.

Clearly, Nikita is also struggling with her own feelings of guilt: Michael can no longer operate in the field or shoot a weapon accurately, intrinsic parts of his identity that have obviously made him feel secure and self-reliant for years in terms of the job, let alone in protecting the woman he loves. Hell, the guy couldn't even make a fist to punch Owen when he was being provoked. There are no right answers for the situation that Michael and Nikita now find themselves in, but somehow, their love has to be strong enough to overcome this obstacle like so many others.

Thankfully, even though Michael spent much of the episode brooding attractively and feeling sorry for himself, he also proved himself useful back at Ops, saving the day by directing Nikita and Owen in their mission against Liam in a way that Ryan (with zero super-spy experience) never could. Though Michael would clearly rather be in the field to watch Nikita's back himself, he demonstrated his enviable strategic mind and reminded the rest of Division that having perfect aim isn't everything. (Pretty insensitive of the rest of the team to applaud him, though, given the circumstances.)

Nikita and Michael's final fight was heartbreaking in all the ways the show does best -- with Nikita begging Michael to let her in and Michael's pride still too wounded to allow it. Watching him succeed in making a fist only after his confrontation with her was agonizing, as was Nikita's face as she listened to him punching out his anger and grief. Another stunning, sure-to-be-underrated performance from both West and Q.

It's also great to see Owen being brought slowly into the team, even if right now he's there to provide friction in Nikita and Michael's relationship. His methods are the polar opposite of Michael's, but his expertise as a cleaner and Guardian is undoubtedly invaluable, and Devon Sawa always provides a compelling performance, even when Owen's busting Michael's balls. I like seeing the two on the same page more than seeing them at odds, but hopefully as Michael begins walking the road to recovery, they'll both be able to stow the alpha dog routine.

I'm also intrigued to see whether Michael's painful situation will mirror Alex's attempts to get clean; Michael seemed adamant that he didn't want to take painkillers to deal with his phantom limb syndrome, while Alex spent most of the episode trying various methods to heal from the effects of her relapse, so the two should have plenty in common over the coming weeks. Hopefully they'll see each other's struggles and be able to relate, instead of withdrawing from the opportunity and burying their pain, as is Michael's MO.

It was a pleasure to see two such well-crafted episodes in a row -- and even more so to see those creative efforts reflected in a ratings boost for "Aftermath". Kudos to Michael Brandon Guercio and Carlos Coto for writing such engaging scripts. It seems as though Michael's situation will create plenty of compelling conflict and character growth for a number of our characters over the next few episodes; I can't wait to see where the season takes us next.

"Nikita" airs Fridays at 8 p.m. EST on The CW.

What did you think of "Aftermath"? Do you forgive the writers for the loss of Michael's hand, or are you still reeling? Weigh in below!

Egypt army to deploy after soccer verdict riot

CAIRO (AP) ? An Egyptian court sentenced 21 people to death Saturday on charges related to one of the world's deadliest incidents of soccer violence, touching off an attempted jailbreak and a riot that killed another eight in the Mediterranean port city that is home to most of the defendants.

The verdict follows deadly clashes between police and demonstrators on Friday, the second anniversary of the uprising that overthrew longtime leader Hosni Mubarak. Such cycles of violence, often lasting for weeks and costing dozens of lives, have occurred regularly over the past two years.

Die-hard soccer fans from both teams, known as Ultras, hold the police at least partially responsible for the Port Said deaths and criticize Egypt's President Mohammed Morsi for doing little to reform the force. Al-Ahly Ultras in particular has been at the forefront of protests. But anger also is boiling in Port Said, where residents say they have been unfairly scapegoated.

Immediately after the verdict, two police were shot dead outside Port Said's main prison when angry relatives tried to storm the facility to free the defendants. Police fired tear gas and rubber bullets, as well as live rounds, at the crowd outside the prison, killing six, security officials said. They spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations.

Security officials said the military is being deployed to Port Said ? the second such deployment in less than 24 hours. The army was widely used to keep order by top generals who took over after Mubarak, but the military has kept a much lower profile since Morsi was elected as president in June.

The military was also deployed overnight in the city of Suez after eight people died in clashes between security forces and protesters opposed to Morsi. Another protester was killed in Ismailiya, and security officials told the state new agency MENA that two policemen were killed in Friday's protests, bringing the death toll on the second anniversary of Egypt's uprising to 11.

Judge Sobhi Abdel-Maguid read out the death sentences related to the Feb. 1 riot in Port Said that killed 74 fans of the Cairo-based Al-Ahly team. Defendants' lawyers said all those sentenced were fans of the Port Said team, Al-Masry. Executions in Egypt are usually carried out by hanging.

The judge Saturday said in his statement read live on state TV that he would announce the verdict for the remaining 52 defendants on March 9.

Among those on trial are nine security officials, but none were handed sentences Saturday, lawyers and security officials say.

Fans of al-Ahly, whose stands were attacked by rival club Al-Masry in the Feb. 1 incident in Port Said, had promised more violence if the accused did not receive death sentences. In the days leading up to the verdict, Al-Ahly fans warned of bloodshed and "retribution". Hundreds of Al-Ahly fans gathered outside the Cairo sports club in anticipation of the verdict, chanting against the police and the government.

Before the judge could read out the names of the 21, families erupted in screams of "Allahu Akbar!" Arabic for God is great, with their hands in the air and waving pictures of the deceased. One man fainted while others hugged one another. The judge smacked the bench several times to try and contain reaction in the courtroom.

"This was necessary," said Nour al-Sabah, whose 17 year-old son Ahmed Zakaria died in the melee. "Now I want to see the guys when they are executed with my own eyes, just as they saw the murder of my son."

The verdict is not expected to calm tensions between the two rival teams. The judge is expected to make public his reasons for the death sentences March 9, when the remaining 52 defendants receive their sentences.

A Port Said resident and lawyer of one of the defendants given a death sentence said the verdict was nothing more than "a political decision to calm the public."

"There is nothing to say these people did anything and we don't understand what this verdict is based on," Mohammed al-Daw told The Associated Press by telephone.

"Our situation in Port Said is very grave because kids were taken from their homes for wearing green T-shirts," he said, referring to the Al-Masry team color.

The violence began after the Port Said's home team won the match, 3-1. Al-Masry fans stormed the pitch after the game ended, attacking Cairo's Al-Ahly fans.

Authorities shut off the stadium lights, plunging it into darkness. In the exit corridor, the fleeing crowd pressed against a chained gate until it broke open. Many were crushed under the crowd of people trying to flee.

Survivors of the riot described a nightmarish scene in the stadium. Police stood by doing nothing, they said, as fans of Al-Masry attacked supporters of the top Cairo club stabbing them and throwing them off bleachers.

Al-Ahly survivors said supporters of Al-Masry carved the words "Port Said" into their bodies and undressed them while beating them with iron bars.

While there has long been bad blood between the two rival teams, many blamed police for failing to perform usual searches for weapons at the stadium.

Both Al-Ahly Ultras and Al-Masry Ultras widely believe that ex-members of the ousted regime of Hosni Mubarak helped instigate the attack, and that the police at the very least were responsible for gross negligence. It is not clear what kind of evidence, if any, was presented to the court to back up claims that the attack had been orchestrated by regime officials.

"The police are thugs!" yelled relatives of the deceased inside the courtroom before the judge took the bench.

As is customary in Egypt, the death sentences will be sent to the nation's top religious authority, the Grand Mufti, for approval, though the court has final say on the matter.

All of the defendants ? who were not present in the courtroom Saturday for security reasons ? have the right to appeal the verdict.

The melee was the world's deadliest soccer violence in 15 years.

The Ultras are proud of their hatred for the police, who were the backbone of Mubarak's authoritarian rule. They then then directed their chants against the military rulers who took over after Mubarak's ouster.

Ultras from several Egyptian sports clubs were engaged in deadly clashes with police near the Interior Ministry headquarters in Cairo that killed 42 people less than three months before the soccer melee in Port Said.

Wis. sheriff: 'Safety is no longer a spectator sport,' get gun training

A Wisconsin sheriff says he released an ad calling on residents to defend themselves because the old model of having a citizen call 911 and wait for help isn't always the best option.

In the ad, Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke Jr. tells residents that when it comes to personal safety: "I need you in the game." He urges citizens to learn to use firearms so they can "fight back" until authorities arrive.

The ad has drawn sharp criticism from other area officials. The president of the Milwaukee Deputy Sheriffs' Association, Roy Felber, says it sounds like a call to vigilantism.

But Clarke says he can either whine about budget cuts that have reduced the number of deputies or call on citizens to work with officers in some situations.

Letters to the Editor Friday - Savannah Morning News

Windsor Forest residents, do not conjure up a meeting in response to the recent murders on Savannah?s Southside.

The Windsor Forest Neighborhood Association hosts quarterly meetings, but the majority of residents do not attend.

There is never more than one or two African Americans from the Windsor Forest neighborhood present at these meetings. Most of the folks that do attend these meetings are senior citizens.

What a shame! You do not have to be a homeowner, a college graduate or anyone special to attend these meetings. It costs $20 a year to be a member, but you can participate for free.

More folks need to lead by example. Take a look at some of the yards and houses in Windsor Forest, especially those in the vicinity of the recent Windsor Forest shooting.

It is more than the so-called thugs bringing down our community. It is the lazy homeowners with the derelict properties and yards, the trash on the streets, the cracked and overgrown sidewalks, the overgrown gutters and so forth.

We need to get more involved in our community. Do not blame the thugs for Windsor Forest demise. Look at yourselves and your neighbors first.

Wanted: People who have never had cancer

It?s often far too easy to underestimate the importance of cancer research ... until you hear the words ?you have cancer.?

Those three words can make all the difference between simply absorbing news about developments in cancer research and truly appreciating the power of what scientists like those funded by the American Cancer Society do each and every day.

This Feb. 26-March 1, scientists aren?t the only ones who will be making a difference. Residents of our community will have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to enroll in the American Cancer Society?s third Cancer Prevention Study which seeks to help us better understand the factors that cause or prevent cancer.

Individuals between the ages of 30 and 65 who have never been diagnosed with cancer and are willing to make a long-term commitment to the study are encouraged to sign up. Those who choose to enroll will simply fill out a comprehensive survey packet about health history, provide a small blood sample (to be collected by trained phlebotomists) and provide a waist measure. Participants will periodically be sent a follow-up questionnaire for the next 20 to 30 years.

Remember: Research being done today will help ensure future generations never have to hear those dreaded three words.

Love affair with firearms: We need honest talk

Today, America stands at a crossroads with her long-standing love affair with firearms.

The road back is an honorable tradition of a people who received the right to bear arms by a wise and forward-thinking group of Founding Fathers. Yet the present is mired with difficult problems, and the road forward is unclear.

What is the meaning, today, of the Second Amendment? Is it to give the right to procure a device whose sole purpose is to kill as many human beings in as short a time as possible, or is it to allow honest citizens the security of a firearm in a time of need?

Is it to allow to pack a clip with a hundred rounds of ammo, or is the right for our citizens to legally hunt on private and public lands? Is it both, or is it neither?

Is it time for Americans to, dare it be said, hold an honest conversation on these things, or is it still time to decry and demonize anyone with whom one might disagree?

The decision is the court of public opinion, and the race is too close to call.

How to escape clutches of the political parties

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary (online) defines a labor union as ?an organization of workers formed to protect the rights and interests of its members.?

Consider the focus of our major political parties. They are organizations of individuals with workers in the Congress. They espouse goals and mantras purportedly to achieve specific results. Labor unions pursue the same ends. There is no doubt both organizations seek to protect the jobs of their members.

Unions have a ?business agent? who is the chief of the group. Political parties have ?majority? or ?minority? leaders who occupy the identical responsibility ? to keep the members in line and promote their interests to the employer or legislatures. Each has benefits, such as, health insurance, pensions and tactics to accomplish their goals. There are internal disciplinary rules.

There is a way our nation could escape the self-interest of the political parties. A constitutional amendment could be adopted that congressional and state legislative districts be established by the Census Bureau which seeks each area be comprised of a similar number of individuals of male/female and age and ethnic spreads or a similar balanced composition. That would encourage the political unions to promote legislation which benefits a broad element of our society.

Politicians say anything to get elected

Money talks, and the large corporations are looking for cheap labor and the politicians are looking for money from them for their next election.

We the taxpayers are stupid not to see this. Vote every incumbent out of office; I don?t care how good he or she is. They will tell you anything to get elected.

Vote out every incumbent. They will see they are supposed to be serving voters, not big money lobbyists like Grover Norquist.

We have two members of Congress who have hired illegal aliens into their federal offices. Rep. Kyrsten Sinema, D-Ariz., hired Erika Andiola (who was brought into this country at 11 years of age). She attended college on the U.S. dollar, while we have children of American citizens who cannot afford to go.

Rep. Luis V. Gutierrez, D-Ill., hired Jose M. Quintero (the first young immigrant in Illinois to receive work authorization via Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) .

These are jobs that the legal American citizen would/could love to have. To me this is a slap in the face to legal American citizens.

Parrot Zik

The Parrot Zik seems to do everything. Wireless Bluetooth audio? Check. Active noise cancellation? Yep. Integrated NFC and touch sensitive controls that auto-pause your music when you remove the headphones? Of course. There's even a free app from Parrot that's extremely useful. However, one reason it's useful is that it's the only way to balance out the Zik's highly-sculpted frequency response. With so many bells and whistles, the Zik, designed by Philippe Starck, risks being a jack-of-all-trades, master of none. It's not the best-sounding, nor best noise canceling pair out there, but at $399.95 (list), it's priced like it is. So many products would be a jumbled mess with such an array of features, however, and the Zik manages its arsenal gracefully. Above all else, it's a beautifully, thoughtfully designed headphone pair.

Design
First things first: These headphones are pretty stunning, with a luxurious combination of black leather, chrome, and a nice black matte surface. The ear pads are very plush, and for the first thirty seconds, they're the most comfortable headphones you've ever worn. Eventually, the underside of the headband, which can be precision adjusted and then locked in place, gets a little uncomfortable, putting some less-than-cushiony pressure on the scalp, regardless of adjustments. The awesome ear pads more than cancel out the headband's less-than-comfortable design, however.

Aside from a Power button on the right ear, there are no buttons, but there are plenty of invisible controls. Once you've paired your device via Bluetooth?a process that can be done swiftly via NFC on compatible devices, and fairly quickly using the standard pairing method, as well?you can control volume by swiping your finger up or down the right ear's outer panel. Swipe forward or backward, you skip a song or rewind. Tap once, and you pause or answer a call. It's all quite intuitive, and completely hidden from sight.Parrot Zik inline

Then there's the sensor on the surface of the ear pads that detects when you're wearing the headphones. The aforementioned app lets you set the Zik up so the active noise cancellation switches on the moment the sensor detects they're on?a process that takes a split second. Your music also auto-pauses every time you remove the headphones, and starts up when you put them back on. Simply put, these are very impressive design functions?the kind that, at first, wow you a little bit with their simplicity and originality.

Occasionally, the sensor falters?after all, it's a filter that detects pressure from your skin, but not specifically your cheek. If you rest your headphones around your neck or place your fingers in the wrong spot while holding them, you might hear your music start up unexpectedly. It's easy to fix, however?just move the ear pads away from your skin.

I'd argue the convenient auto-pause feature is more than just a novelty, and worth this minor side-issue, though I do wish the app allowed you to shut this feature off if you so desired. You can override playback by using the controls on your source device. You can also fine tune volume settings and navigate playback on the source device, without issue, for those who don't want to use the blind controls on the right ear's surface.

The headphones also include a built-in mic for taking calls, and additional mics for the noise cancellation. A 3.5mm audio cable is also included for wired playback. A USB cable is included for charging and updates, though you can also wirelessly receive updates (via Bluetooth) to the headphones' firmware via the App.

Even the battery compartment is well-designed. The outside panel of the left ear cup pops off easily, in goes the included rechargeable battery, and a light magnetic force snaps it consistently back into place. I'd guess I could remove and replace the lid without much effort in less than two seconds on every try. Parrot rates the battery life at roughly 6 hours when you are using all the features, 18 hours when you use just the noise cancellation (it can be turned off in the app), and 24 hours of standby.

Performance
It's kind of hard to pinpoint what the Zik actually sounds like, since it's very tweakable, thanks to the customizable EQ. To be blunt, without the EQ, the Zik does not sound very good, to me at least. It is far too bass heavy, with weird spikes around the hi-mid region that have an unpleasant effect on vocals and the attack of stringed instruments and some percussion. However: There is never any distortion at top volumes, even on deep bass tracks, and you can fine-tune the EQ so much as to almost completely eliminate the harshness of the sound signature.

Furthermore, while you can use the Zik in passive mode (without being powered up), it might as well be a different pair of headphones. No power gives you a more or less bass-free, treble-heavy frequency response, while powering up makes things overly-bass-heavy. Obviously, you can only use the headphones passively when the included 3.5mm cable is connected to your sound source. (By the way, in wired mode, the Zik will mute your music, but not pause it. At least this was the case with an older MacBook?with headphones off, sound disappeared, but the song in iTunes continued to play.) Being able to use the headphones wired, and even passively, albeit with diminishing returns, is a plus. But the bottom line here is: The Zik has an identity crisis, sonically speaking.

With no EQ adjustment, and powered up, the Zik manages a dubious feat: It is simultaneously muddy (lacking definition in the low-mid range) and tinny (overly tweaked and harsh in the hi-mid range). Not exactly $400 sound. But a visit to the free app, and some tweaking (I lowered the deep bass, boosted the mid-bass frequencies, cut the high-mids, and boosted the highs?in each case, not by much) turns the Zik's capable drivers into nice-sounding headphones.

I could go through my usual descriptions of how classical, pop, rock, hip hop, and folk music sound through the Zik, but it seems pointless. Trust me: if you care about sound quality, you'll be adjusting the Zik from its default setting immediately. If adjustment were impossible, the Zik's rating would probably be a 3.0, saved from a worse rating by its excellent, groundbreaking design. But since the default setting can be so easily tweaked and tuned, and even turned into a frequency response that borders on flat (or booming, if you wish), it's pointless to rate and review this headphone pair in a vacuum. Basically, if you lack an iOS or Android device, don't bother with the Zik, because the app is the single-most important piece of the puzzle when it comes to its audio performance.

But let's not forget about noise cancellation. When you first place the Zik on your head, the world appears to go on mute. Is the noise cancellation as stark (no pun intended) as, say, the Bose QuietComfort 15's? No. but it's still quite effective, and while there is some noticeable hiss added to the equation, it's not nearly as noticeable as it is on pairs with less effective NC circuitry. The circuitry here is above average?not the best, but in a pair that also happens to be wireless and full of secret magic tricks, certainly more than acceptable.

Who is the Zik for? Travelers, I'd guess?those with Bluetooth mobile devices, a desire for active noise cancellation, and, let's face it, those who want a very stylish and feature-loaded product. The Zik won't disappoint this crowd.

However, $400 is a lot of money, and if you're more of a sound snob than a feature-fiend, there are other headphones in this realm to consider. If noise cancellation is the most important thing to you, the aforementioned Bose QuietComfort 15 is superior. If you're looking for great noise cancellation as well as excellent audio performance, the AKG K 490 NC is a borderline masterpiece. And if you couldn't care less about noise cancellation but would love a wireless headphone pair that sounds great, consider the Logitech UE 9000.

If?all of this sounds very nice, but what you really want is a wireless option for a lot less money, consider the simple-but-effective Sennheiser MM 100?there's no noise cancellation, but at moderate levels it offers solid wireless audio at a fraction of the price.?

For those of you who love the sleek design and clever features that Apple has built into its products over the years, the Parrot Zik offers that level of appeal, answering needs you didn't think you had, and doing so automatically. I wish it sounded better out of the box, but kudos to Philippe Starck?the Zik is a magnum opus of design.
